Highly anticipated: The PS5 is proving incredibly popular, though not everyone loves the white color scheme. Luckily, third-party seller SUP3R5 has something special: a black PlayStation 5 inspired by the best-selling console of all time, the PS2. And it goes on sale today.

SUP3R5 writes that orders for its custom PS5 will begin today (January 8) at 3pm EST / 12pm PT and are expected to ship in late spring 2021. While the company is US-based, orders can be shipped internationally.

You best move fast if you want to secure one of the consoles. Only 304 are being produced—a reference to the PlayStation 2's March 4, 2000 launch date. Unfortunately, there are over 54,000 people on the "waitlist," so don't hold your breath.

Those who want the disc version of the "retro-inspired" PS5 will pay $749 (before shipping), that's $250 more than the standard retail version, while the digital-only console is $649 (MSRP: $399). Those prices are still cheaper than buying a regular PS5 from eBay, of course. The consoles come with a PS2-style DualSense controller, which can also be bought separately for $99; they usually cost $69.

To hopefully prevent the same bot issues suffered by the PlayStation 5—and Xbox Series X/S, RTX 3000 series, Ryzen 5000 CPUs, etc.—SUP3R5 is limiting console purchases to one per customer while controller sales are limited to two per household. The company also has additional "security measures" in place.

It's important to note that only the console's side panels were removed during the conversion process, meaning Sony's standard hardware guarantee will still be valid. The DualSense controller, however, had to be completely disassembled, thereby voiding the warranty.

Just before the PS5's release in November, a company called CustomizeMyPlates.com, which had already been forced to change its name from PlateStation5.com by Sony, removed its custom faceplates from sale and canceled pre-orders following a legal threat from the firm. It seems SUP3R5 won't be suffering the same fate, at least for now.

It looks gorgeous! I spraypainted my PS5 panels dark blue and gold to match my living room, that looked really good, then one of my cats sprayed on it and the process of cleaning removed some of the paint so had to re do it, still looks good. I may try and get replacement panels though as the paint is quite thick now, and the panels are hard to remove.
Best of luck for anyone who wants one of these! Personally, I'd just like a black controller!

Cat marked it now it's his property. Got to neuter him if you don't want him to spray everywhere.

PS2 "themed" doesn't look anything like a PS2. Still got my PS2 and it looks better then this ugly site. It looks like they literally took a black 3-ring binder and placed a PS5 inside of it. Bleh.

Then again, to each their own.

... are you... are you blind?
It's PS2 black, PS2 coloured Logo, with PS2 coloured buttons, and the PS2 blue unique product production number plate....
It's still a PS5, of course it's still a PS5, what would you expect?

As much as I love the look of the all black system/controller, this is not an official product from Sony. I don't think people should even consider buying it.

I know this is a minor nit-picky thing but their website is using a Let's Encrypt SSL. There is nothing wrong with using Let's Encrypt but if a company really wants to show you they care, they will probably use a paid SSL. I think Let's Encrypt is a great option for personal websites but shouldn't be used business websites.

If you do want to buy this console from them, I would at least suggest waiting until people actually go through the complete process of getting it. They say they will ship in the Spring timeframe but that just doesn't seem right and another reason to avoid it.

I will personally just wait until I can order a PS5 directly from Sony and I do realize that it might be April/May or even later before that is possible. The side panels come off easily enough and you can do whatever you want to those.

Maybe Sony will release an official all black console/controller but who knows.

This is how the PS5 should've looked. No one would've meme'd the hell out of this design. This looks like something I'd love to have displayed in my living room.

Um, yea, it's black, and black is gude, but it does STILL look like a console inside a bendable binder...

I'll wait for Sony to release their own version, because you have to know that this was a purposely move to try to get people to buy another PS5. People from the C64-Nintendo days and at least a couple gens after that "seem to" prefer black and silver. (Sorry, I don't have a link to support that ATM.)

No, no, no.

Door nob shiny mirror brass finish.

That's the BFG right there folks. It's all over. Everybody go home.

I'm just waiting for companies to start selling the side panels in different colours. Controller is fine the way it is, but anything to make the console look a bit less like a router. At 360 launch there were loads of 3rd party faceplates. I want PS5 panels damn it!

Amazing really, how billion-dollar companies continually get embarrassed by modders and hobbyists who create genuinely better looking versions of products, despite no-doubt millions being spent on design and market testing.

The design makes me think it's a James Bond console with a tuxedo. This design reminds me of HALF-LIFE 2 building or wall design. Hard to explain.
