So, over the weekend I was going to upgrade my sons PC with some old parts I had laying around from an old build. I have a R5 1600, MSI B450m motherboard, and 16GB of Gskill RAM. I was going to use his GPU as it is still working fine. When I swapped the components it would POST just fine but after a few minutes in windows it would black screen freeze or rebboot to blue screen. After several attempts we swapped the old hardware back with no issues and everything ran as expected. So, I tried to build the whole system on the countertop and see if I could install windows on a seperate blank drive. As soon as the windows install starts to write to the disks it will again freeze and black screen. I swapped the motherboard to another old one I had laying around this time an AsRock B350 and it did the exact same thing. I have never seen a CPU lose the ability to communicate with the I/O like this but wanted to post it just in case someone else runs into a similar issue. At some point I will look for a known good working CPU and verify but this is the first time I have seen a partial CPU failure like this beyond POST.
