Tumblr convention is a hilarious disaster and most likely a scam

Dashcon, as they are calling it for some reason, seems to be a scam. Originally organized as a convention for tumblr fans with live entertainment vendors, they ended up having no more than a bouncy castle and ball pit. Most tumblr users have the mentality of seven year olds so I don't think it will be all bad for those who showed up.

It seems as though the convention didn't make enough money to pay the entertainment. Also, not some, but all vendors backed out of the convention before it even opened. Later on someone made a "save dashcon" page on kickstarter looking for donations which also looks like it was just a scam.

DashCon, a startup fandom convention that aimed to be "the largest gathering of Tumblr users to date" took place over the weekend at a hotel in Schaumburg, Illinois
Is that pronounced Shamburg/Scamburg/Scumburg for an intentional pun from the start?

I hate feeling this way, but anyone willing to support a startup without guarantee is almost asking to be scammed. I know the point of Kickstarter is to help those without credibility. But if Kickstarter doesn't have protective measures countering scams, I could never see myself buying into anything unknown.
