Uber self-driving vehicle involved in fatal collision with pedestrian

moose here in Canada are mostly black, no lights along the highway.the cutting back of forest along the highway works somewhat. a motion detection system was tested ,has since been removed .there is still no AI that can make decisions like the human brain . Good AI should come before we allow autonomous vehicles on the roads. automation is moving too fast IMO. that includes replacing workers ..what's the plan for all the displaced workers, commercial drivers, ETC? anybody got thoughts on this? I would like to hear them.
I agree with your sentiments, but I am also aware that if AI cars and trucks prove to be cheaper/faster/better/safer, it will be hard to keep folks with the old ways.

Almost 40,000 people a year die in the US in automotive accidents, but you hear about ONE autonomous car death accident a year.
C'mon dude, how many miles driven autonomously, versus how many miles driven by humans. That one fatality might be above the national average for highway deaths per mile.

Besides that's what self driving cars were supposed to be about, so you could d!ck around on your phone, bang your girlfriend. or whatever, without worrying anything about the car, or where it is, or isn't going.

But again, isn't all this crap about "self driving cars", to patronize a bunch of thumb sucking millennials who are scared to death of the other humans on the road?

This BS with self driving cars is really a fecal mass of "keeping up with the Joneses", on a corporate level.

If one company is working on a self driving car, then they all have to do the same.

Same sh!t with flying cars, when somebody gets to working on one, the rest of the corporate wannabes have to have one of their own.

Most of the crap they're putting put, looks like a Kickstarter fraud/money pit anyway.

we will see,how will AI react when a group decides its load is worth hijacking.no driver, will that make it less of a crime?who's gonna stick the shotty out the window to prevent the hijacking?exciting times ahead.

But really, don't we already have "self driving semis"? I think they call them, "box cars".

Although, it wouldn't hurt to give me a shout if you here about a shipment of "ludes", coming from Mexico.

OK, DHS, FBI, Etc., ("if you're watching"), I'm just joking about that last remark.

I don't want to live in a world where I can't watch porn on my phone and crank one out on my way to work in the morning

Nah, it's for old folks to be able to live at home for another couple of years before they get tucked into a nursing home.

with all the weed being legalized in Canada in the coming months .it will be on rubber tires going everywhere on the short runs.box cars long haul.
and rails only go to major centres .not to everywhere.

It's not the ratio of miles/deaths. It's that this death was because of failed technology and should not have been. According to all of the comments, I guess these cars only detect people/objects in crosswalks? I keep being told that these things will avoid such issues, but here we are. Which one of you would like to cross in front of one of these - even if in a crosswalk?

Did you read it? The uber was most definitely at fault. A person pushing a fully loaded bicycle can't just dart into a lane. I'm a big guy and I couldn't. Second of all - a human would have seen it and reacted proactively. A stupid computer can't predict this. Basic human instinct. Most likely, because of the human passenger "safety" driver, he was probably "confident" there would never be an issue, so he wasn't paying attention to take over. Probably playing on his cell phone.

"she came from the shadows" this is bullcrap. I don't see any shadows in the pics. Placing blame on anything but the self-wrecking car. That is a well-lit road also.

There is a video of incident and the police reviewed it saying that wasn't at fault. It will go to court and the courts will decide who it was. This crap is why we have jaywalking laws, you can't just jump in front of a car.

So you are saying for 100% certainty that if she was crossing at the crosswalk it wouldn't have hit her? So, what if it was a deer standing next to the highway? Does it know like a human does to hit the brakes and slow down before getting to the deer that may jump into the lane? Or is it going to keep doing 60mph and send the deer through the windshield and kill the people?

You're arguing with physics here. There is this thing called stopping distance. If she ran out in front of the car in a distance less than that of the stopping distance of the vehicle there was nothing the car or driver could do.

No, incant say for 100% certainty, they didn't release the video and I'm also not a lawyer. So to counter that amazingly dumb thing you said, can you say with 100% certainty that it WAS the car or drivers fault?

Dude, watch your syntax. Cause that could be interpreted as though you're claiming she committed suicide.

BTW, the cops would still be questioning a human driver in the same circumstance. Uber seems to do whatever it feels like, regulations be damned, and I suppose there's sort of an unspoken premise that Uber is good for an ares';s economy, whereas a human driver involved in an accident is just a nuisance pile of paperwork.

The guy in the car was just lucky it wasn't a moose , they don't use crosswalks either.
HEY! I'M WALKIN HERE!...
Your quote reminded me of the one Lt. Dan said in the movie Forrest Gump. I had a good belly laugh when I read that.
Curious.....when did Arizona get (whatever is plural for) moose? AI, Human (hell even a moose) would **** themselves if all came across each other in Arizona. There would be a pile up on I15 that stretched to I10. LOL

I think the plural of moose is "herd". And if you'll buy that, I've got some......

The video is available. Shows a very difficult to avoid situation and a somewhat inattentive human. Telemetry needed...what did LIDAR see?

More: I am wondering why LIDAR did not work better than human sight...it should have picked up on something in the roadway 150 ft ahead of the light cone.

What's more alarming is the fact that a safety person was in the vehicle. How much you want to bet that person was on their phone and/or not paying attention? This isn't the first issue with Uber. In the past, a self-driving Uber car ran a red light in San Francisco while the company operated in the city without regulatory approval.

It's been determined via onboard video that it can be seen that the safety person was looking down and looked up just seconds before the person was hit. I'm not saying why they were looking down, but if it's found they were on their phone or other device and not paying attention to what is going on ahead, then their role as a safety person was pretty much ignored.
