US Air Force to test autonomous AI fighter against a human next year

Holy $#!+, Captain America heads this project???

I thought we were being trolled when I read that!

And I am sure he is not tired of hearing it lol.

While it's a nice thought, they need to test it against a LOT more than just another pilot. Let's put it on the Top Gun range and let half a dozen pilots engage it and see how it does. They also need to test it for any form of radio signal (computer or otherwise) to make sure it cannot have it's internal computer systems crashed, redirected, etc. In other words, this has to be THE acid test long before we consider setting it loose. I would like to see it used for more mundane purposes like flying transports, refueling missions, etc. While these are no less important, they would be less demanding and not require the high degree of sophistication and rapid reaction as a fighter. We know it's coming but we can't afford to just put it out there under a "good enough for government" approach.

Project Codename Connor is a go. We have it all under control, all we have to do is push this button and it’s turns the AI off. See just like this, just like this (hey Mike it’s not responding). Don’t worry folks just a few technical gremlins we’ll have it sorted in no .... arrrrggghhh. Meanwhile AI plane strafes entire audience.

Yea because replacing troops with ai so we don't loose people to inevitable wars is a bad idea.
Or the cost of going to war (in human casualties) becomes much lower. Enables the White House to engage in much lower intensity wars at a much faster rate.. in general, heightens the whole war scenario. Against who ... China or Russia? Or is it inevitable that they will team up to take down the ENEMY.
Those feet on the ground? are they Metal or Flesh?

We can't even make self driving cars work. But... Flying death machines, completely controlled by robot intelligence. What could possibly go wrong.

The true limitation of a flying machine is the pilot. The aircraft itself is mostly controlled by a computer because the fighters are built inherently unstable. A computer is necessary to control all flight control surfaces.

The weapons, airframe and all sub systems are limited by the presence of a pilot that can't tolerate the G-forces the aircraft itself is built to tolerate.

We've had 3 high profile crashes lately - not counting the Snobird crash in Canada. 2 F-35 and 1 F22. There was also a recent F-16 crash.

I'd bet good money on the machine.
Yes, I think a key factor here is G-force. An AI drone could pull some crazy Gs, especially in a frame modified to handle that and give it a serious advantage over a human opponent in a dogfight. But an AI augmenting a human pilot would need to be careful not to cause harm to the pilot. There better be a very big red Override AI button in the cockpit.

This reminds me of that Star Trek TOS episode "A Taste of Armageddon" where there was a war going on for a very long time that was fought by computer. Then, the people who were "killed" had to show up to be vaporized. - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Taste_of_Armageddon
