USB locks PC when i attach any drive or media player

I have a Hp Pavilion a810n totally stock except for an Nvida video card and a tv tuner. AMD 64 chip. Three weeks ago the thing suddenly stopped letting me hook up my ARCHOS 404, my wife's 604 or my Jump drive 2.0 pro. When i hook any of these up the pc freezes. i do have the (apparently) dreaded sis 7001 driver and could not find another. i tried a Google search and that is how i found this place. Any ideas???

I am a noob to fixing my pc myself but this is starting to p!zz me off!!!!

remove your important data and save to elsewhere.
reformat the hdd and reinstall windows with all drivers.
do not plug in a flash with U3 on it. Remove that from the flash drive prior.

inventory your USB devices to ensure you are NOT using a USB keyboard or mouse,
then delete all USB drivers and reboot

autoconfig will install the correct drivers.

power off, connect the failing device and then power on -- it should auto install
also.
