Thanks again.

I've completed running CCleaner several times and followed the other cleanup instructions (eliminating unused programs, running disk cleanup [twice] and disk defrag [twice]).

(In the process, I "remembered" 8 gig that was being taken up by a backup done from my desktop when I was worried that the desktop might have died. That backup has now been deleted.)

As for memory, I took a look at Orcalogic (also looked through eBay offerings -- not attractive) but would opt for Crucial.com unless you have reservations.
Crucial's quotes are lower, and it looks like Orcalogic is going to charge me VAT (plus non-standard shipping).

Where I'm uncertain at this point is how much to add: just put another 256 into the other slot, or put a 512 into the other slot, or pull the existing 256 in favor of two 512's?

Crucial really lays these options out nicely, even showing how much better performance will be... but should I trust those estimates?

Also, given this machine is 2 1/2 years old, would the $114 (from Crucial for the two 512's plus a $3 wristband) run the risk of throwing good money after a bad machine?

Two 512`s would be my recommendation, if you want to see a huge performance hit. I don`t recommend trying to mix new ram with your existing ram, unless it`s exactly the same brand/size/speed.

Crucial is a very reputable company and I`d say you can pretty much trust what they say.

$114 versus the cost of a new laptop? Only you can decide if that`s warranted. Of course, you could just buy a 512 stick of ram and see if the performance boost suits your expectations.

Regards Howard :)

Thanks! I'm on my way to a 1-gig machine!

PS - My next topic is debugging my DSL connection; should this be a new thread? (and is it grist for the techspot mill?)

Yes, that should be a new thread in our storage and networking forum.
