Virtuix’s Omni gaming treadmill is now available for pre-order following an overwhelmingly successful run on Kickstarter earlier this year that racked up more than $1.1 million in funding. An investment of $499 for single-player action or $1,018 (multiplayer) will get your name on the list for the innovative virtual reality device.
A single-player kit includes the Omni platform, shoes, belt and tracking hardware / software while the more expensive bundle comes with two setups and three pairs of shoes. Unfortunately the price tag doesn’t include the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset – an accessory that you’ll surely want to complete your in-home VR setup.
If you aren’t familiar, the Omni is a multi-directional treadmill of sorts that translates real-world movements into in-game motion. In addition to being able to track basic movements like walking or running, the Omni can detect other actions like crouching, jumping and strafing – movements that are sure to inject a bit more realism into first-person shooters.
The special Omni shoes work in conjunction with the omnidirectional base to allow users to move comfortably. They are said to feature a low friction sole with an intricate configuration that helps stabilize the foot for a steadier gait.
Virtuix says the Omni treadmill is scheduled to start shipping in March of 2014. Do note, however, that you’ll also need to shell out an extra $60 for shipping ($90 for international orders). Console gamers need not apply as this is a PC-only accessory (at least, for now).
