dell XP pro boots but freezes when icons should be loading, i cannot boot in safe mode, i have tried booting from xp cd to repair, still only get blue screen with hard drive error, run diagnostics and it finds no problems any way to get it back up so I can get my data

If you cannot boot into Safe Mode and you cannot run in Normal Mode and you cannot do a repair, there's not much else to do but reformat and reinstall.

Try CHKDSK again on the Recovery Console. I guess its a corrupt drive.

Yes, the hard drive is probably toast, unless a low level format can bring it back to life. I'm afraid any data on it is lost... Backing up important data, before a hard drive crash, is not dificult any longer gesmom2
