WD My Passport - damaged photos

I copied all my photos and documents to the external drive before setting up a new computer. Documents copied fine, photo icons looked fine but most won't open - just shows a solid color, no picture.

Hmm what image file association is it with, .jpg, .png, jpg2, if the photo icons looked fine in the preview thumbnail.
I'm sure it will be fine, right click on the photo, choose to open with photo gallery.
If windows can open the file and display the picture is fine use this program here to make sure of that.

Nice software but it didn't help. In fact, it won't even upload a file to show you.
Just noticed, the file size is huge - 2.5 mb for the ones that won't open, while most of the files that open are a couple hundred kb. They all opened fine on my computer, but not after being copied to the passport.

Well if the files are damaged and non recoverable there is nothing else you can do but delete them.
As for the drive itself run checkdsk on it to make sure there aren't any bad sectors.
If so that could be the main reason your files are getting corrupted, you could rma the drive for a much better one.
However verify the warranty status with western digital before you do anything else.

There is data saving companies out there, try that.

Try going into safe mode and see what you can do in there. gl

WD Passport? What capacity? The 3-4TB units are known to have a high failure rate. :sigh:
