What do you think of No Man's Sky?

Why do people still buy games or order it release date.
They are always buggy as hell and in need of several patches.
Or your SLi'd machine is getting low fps. Ditch a card genius.
Or it sucks. Omgrlyitwasalljusthypeomgomg...
The same stories we here time and time again yet no one learns.
Games are worth £10 peeps. No more. And £1 if on EAs origin.
I bet most people here who bought this game on ps4 have played skyrim on pc and yet ordered the ps4 remaster at full price to play the same damn game again. Oh the logic.

Probably the same reason people go to a movie in the theaters on the release date. They've been waiting for a long time to see a particular movie, and want to be able to decide for themselves if it's a good flick or not, rather than letting some mouth breathing critic decide for them. The same applies to games in my opinion. I don't trust many critics, and I would rather spend my money to see if I think it's going to be something I'll enjoy. In this case, the NMS was a flop in my book. I took it back, and traded it for another game I've been wanting, and I couldn't be happier with the swap. No loss here.

And while I get that critics are an opinion and forming your own is smarter. So is understanding that hype sells crap, and crap is usually what they are selling. So why pay 10 times something's worth before a patch, a fix. Why be one of the plebs who don't have a clue or haven't learnt from every other freaking game, movie, album etc since the invention of the internets.

If nobody purchased games early on, who would send in crash reports, bug reports, etc? Software companies have started downsizing their testing departments, and have begun relying on the end user for testing. While I don't agree with this approach, in many cases that's just how it is. Especially at small game companies. Saying that a game is only worth £10, or £1 if it's on Origin, is a little narrow minded. The value of a game is dependent on what the market will bear. A value of £1-£10 is what you might expect to pay for a bargain bin game that has been on the market for several years, not for a brand new game. Prices have never been that low for a new "blockbuster" game as long as I've been buying them, and I've been buying them since the early 80's. I think Nintendo cartridges were going for $19.95-$29.95 brand new back then.

The standard price for new PC games in 1990 was $30-40 and it stayed that way for fifteen years. For most of the period the vast majority of games had only minor problems at launch. The era of the $60 game is relatively new and is WELL beyond the rate of income growth, at least in the US. Absurd prices for games with little content is one of the biggest drivers of game piracy..probably second only to the completely unfinished state that most games are released in these days.

I am enjoying it.

However, I don't feel it's worth $60, more like $30 or $40.

I'm not happy with the technical side of the game though. Looks like it's rendered at an internal resolution lower than what is set ingame. The aliasing is so severe, that I've only seen it this bad with R6 Siege with "temporal filtering", which renders the game at a lower internal resolution and applies MSAA over it.

Yeah, I completely get that. What I don't understand is where he came up with the £1-£10 figure.

All the hype, I thought this would be a cool game! Boy, was I wrong. What junk!

Paid $60 on Steam and within 5 minutes was like, what? Where's the rest of the game? They can not be serious!

I couldn't even get a full screen. Was windowed about 60% of my screen. Could not change anything in settings! I did get my 60 back from Steam within hours. Thanks to Steam for the refund policy.

This game should be $9.99 or less, def not 60!

Not sure about the rest of you, but I know what this game sets out to be, and it nailed it. Many of the expectations that are lofted upon Hello Games' shoulders are entirely unfair. It's a solo *exploration* title developed by a few guys that had some lovely algorithms to work with. With the amount of effort and love put into this game, and the amount of improvements likely coming over the months and years, 60 dollars will seem like nothing in the long run. I promise you that.

I'll leave you with these words:
Exploration is purely transitory and like time, inexorable. It demands that you continue marching forward because once you stop moving, you're no longer in a state of exploration; you simply just exist.

This is very much a philosophical experience, and many gamers either don't care, choose not to care, or can't understand. Sure, it has some merits and it may fall short in technical ways when comparing it to other adventure titles, but that's not the point of No Man's Sky. So, what is the point?

Look up.

EDIT - I'm changing my views. I'm over it already. This is what I originally posted:

"The point is that already this game has already had several moments that have given me chills and made me feel like I'm on the cover of a '50s sci-fi novel. You just have to use your imagination, lose yourself in the world, and come up with your own stories. Then it starts to shine.

It's not for everyone, but those are the kind of games we need."

Now though? I'd say it's really not worth the hassle. The game is too much hard work for not enough reward. You have to grind resources to do ANYTHING, it's just not fun. Sure, it can be spectacular. But the actual game part of it is very poorly designed. There's so much about it that I wish they'd done differently.

If the publishing companies didn't have elaborate TV Commercials maybe a game wouldn't cost 60+.. I don't remember Doom, Quake, Duke Nuke 3d, or Half-Life having TV commercials for the PC. A few of them had commercials for the PS, Dreamcast, etc. They were pretty successful without TV commercials.

I do remember Atari's Mario Bro and Pit Fall commercials with young Jack Black.

Mine is stuck on "initializing".... Got fed up... Will try again tomorrow, or will be getting my money back.

Edit: just googled and apparently I needed to press a key.... Will try again later :)

click and hold. a lot of the menus are unnecessarily like this -_-

I was also going to comment on this article, but I'll put it here, this isnt a direct reply to you Squid, just something I was going to post.

LOOOTS of bugs to work out. On a side note, I did not "purchase" this through Steam, however, I hear that they are releasing some patches, and rumors Nvidia is updating some drivers that might help performance. Let's just hope...

The game interests me, but it is repetative, and unsure what an overall goal is than to explore worlds... if that's the point, there is not enough differences in the planets and even most objects in space, it is not really realistic at all, in any way but that's beside the point. You craft stuff to stay alive, so you can explore, find more resorces to survive... I've run into some random things in the world.

Anyways.... I am considering purchasing this through Steam if these updates and bug fixes come together and give the game better performance.

I guess novelty. If you wait a couple of weeks/months to buy a game it's novelty wears off and then it's not even worth buying. I would value games more than that but $60 is quite expensive and rarely any game is worth that much. People like getting screwed.

You don't even need to wait weeks or months though. If I recall correctly, No Mans Sky released on the 12th, 3 days after the PS4 release (ugh). Polygon published an article about the issues NMS has on PC, on the 12th.

The only thing people had to do to avoid being screwed over, is to not preorder...

The game is beyond boring. It's the same old grind over and over again. Jump from one system to the next, get minerals, get fuel, maybe get a new inventory slot. Boring, boring, and more boring. I made a mistake buying this on PC and I'm more than likely going to get a Steam refund on this purchase. I haven't experienced many of these bugs however. The gameplay is just incredibly dry. I don't even believe it would have any substance if it were multiplayer. Also preordering the game was completely worthless because all you get is a ship that you end up replacing for a better one within the first hour of gameplay. This game was way too overhyped and didn't deliver anything worth holding onto.

For me, this game was right up my alley. Ever since I saw the first trailer, I knew the game would be overhyped and would probably fail, so I set my expectations SUPER low, but still bought the game. So far, it's a lot of fun. It is boring at times, but it gets fun pretty quickly. I've only had it crash once, and my FPS is at a 90 average on high/medium settings on my 970. I really like the game, but I can see where other people's complaints are coming from.

Yes, some instability, but I'm LOVING this game!
spent like an hour figuring out the controls and another 2 fixing my crashed ship so that I can...continue to explore the current planet! :D

Spent the next 5 hours flying around getting a bunch of 'words'
Spent spent half of the time figuring out my inventory space sitch
Spent a LOT of time looking for places to Sell at the crap to make room for new crap; FINALLY figured out that I needed to look for places that have a Docking Platform.
Spent that next who knows how long Upgrading my suit - so rewarding!!!
Spent the next few hours thinking of the best way to make money (Units). Is it crafting? Perhaps the Bypass Chip? - sure! I'll craft a few hundred!
Upgraded my ship!!!!
Darn! Still not enough space on my ship - a few more hundred chips to sell and upgrade my ship again.
Realized that I should have just continued collecting Units until I could get a 30 slot ship.

Finally realized again that I could have been upgrading my ship for free by finding crash sites since they have ships you can repair and make yours - AND the slots in the new ship is always +1 of the ship you're currently flying!!! DARN! Excited to play some more and use this technique!!

Realized so much more!! just don't want my Wall of Text to attack you guys :p

The UI is garbage, the combat is garbage, the two FSAA options are garbage and dynamic screen resolution doesn't work very well so it's a jaggied mess, it becomes real obvious in a matter of hours that the flora and fauna fit within certain archetypes that are repeated everywhere and there isn't nearly as much variety as we've been led to believe, the gather/craft/upgrade loop is really shallow, and every planet is inhabited by the other intelligent races and ships fly overhead all the time so you never have the sense of being out there alone.

But I'm still playing it for some reason. Jetpacking around alien landscapes while looking for monoliths and language stones and selling just enough crap to keep my hyperdrive fueled to move on the the next system towards the core and hoping I find a nice temperate planet apparently is what does it for me.

I sent them an email basically saying that there was little chance of my spending $60 to get this game. I do not even think that I will pay should they take my suggestion of chopping the game in half because it is not finished. I will go back to playing other MMOs until they sort this one out. I do not see any advantage to being an early adopter of this game.

Very entertaining... Been a while since I gamed all night long, but I have and would stay the day if there was no work. No crashes, using a Lenovo Y580

This is why I stopped pre-ordering years ago....

I said that with Simcity 2013... but here we are in 2016, and I'm eagerly awaiting my pre-purchased copy of Planet Coaster. :D

And yeah, I bought Prison Architect, watched every devblog youtube channel, but am yet to play the damn thing!!

I don't think I have a point, and appear to be rambling... Get off my lawn!
