WhatsApp, Snapchat, iMessage may face UK ban within weeks

"Earlier this year, Cameron stated that if re-elected he would look at ways to ban encrypted communication services. “In our country, do we want to allow a means of communication between people which we cannot read? My answer to that question is: ‘No, we must not’,” the Prime Minister said."

This...just....

So

“In our country, do we want to allow a means of communication between people which we cannot overhear?"

Is not much of a stretch then.

Can I please have a private conversation over text with my girlfriend prime minister? the answer is , no.

Is nobody else irratated by the title of this article?

The services are not getting banned in anyway, its just the government applying regulation to encrypted messaging services. The word banned is used as a scaremongering tactic and its journalism like this that ruins your own credibility.

Yeah right. Companies are already re-locating out of the U.K because of this. Ban encryption and you ban any tech that relies on it.

They won't be banned, this kind of thing would put everyone at great danger from stalking, hackers, joe snooper, its just a big stupid lie.

What seems likely is there'll be a big stink about it from joe-public who will in turn start hating, being suspicious of and informing on the privacy minded folks or those who use strong crypto like the sand people / russians / kiddynappers use.. (or leakers, journalists, dodgy looking nerds, intelligent folk, etc).

They'll appear to back-track a little and restrict strong crypto tools, rush through laws which classify them as munitions in some way and force you to disclose keys for anything and everything for whatever reason or face incarceration. The peasants will cheer, the end;

and of course backdoors will be sanctioned for corporate use, because; espionage for our friends across the water.

At least build a good internet infrastructure. UK right now has one of most shitty internet in the world and I'm not exaggerating.

Could have swore a whole e-wagon full of Americans were lamenting the same thing a few months back, right on these very forums.

Wow the UK Is F*****!

You couldn't pay me to live there with retards like that running the country.

I hope you are not a U.S citizen that is saying this.

At least our politicians have the common courtesy to lie to our faces about violating our basic rights. Cameron, on the other hand, is upfront and unapologetic about it. If that doesn't signal to you how many steps ahead of these goons in the States the Brits are, you're in for quite a ride.

No, I think you're the only one. The law specifically states that messaging apps with end-to-end encryption will be banned if their providers do not disable the encryption. Ergo, they may face a ban.

If there is something to be irritated about, it's that Mr. Thubron didn't include in the article a picture of Cameron triumphantly dragging a shackled John Anderton (Minority Report) through the streets for crimes of privatethink.

And in using using the term Retard like that we wouldn't want you in the UK.

Amazing, when did little old GREAT britain become the worlds largest prison? I bet the Scots are happy they decided to stay in the 'family' now.

Incidentally, I bet all the 'terrorists' in britain are having to rethink their technology strategies now. They might even have to code something them selves, something like 'whatsaiMess for terrorists for Windows Phone'. either that or they just say something in plain old unencrypted text like 'Barry! bring the milk in', then boooom! another convenient situation to further limit the sheeple.

This is crazy. If you want to hide from the government you will know what to use and you will use custom encrypted messaging app. Not those popular ones.
They cannot ban all of the encrypted chats.
This will only hurt the average joe who wants to chat with friends but does not want the neighbor to know everything about him...

I've got my own personal server at home, Just done a quick google and I can easily setup a private encrypted instant messenger service for all my friends and family to use. I wonder if that will be illegal under this new ruling?

I will use whatever term I feel like using. Keep your censorship to your own borders fool. Pretty soon you will need a police escort just to use the bathroom in the UK no thanks.
