What just happened? Budget-minded smart home solutions provider Wyze is back with its latest product, a Wi-Fi connected smart light bulb that sells for just $8. That's incredibly affordable for a smart bulb although note, this is a white only bulb - no fancy colored LEDs here.

Wyze is now accepting pre-orders for its next smart home gadget, the Wyze Bulb. This 800 lumen tunable white LED light bulb utilizes Wi-Fi technology and is initially being offered in a four-pack for $30. Individual bulbs will be sold at a later date priced at $8 each, we’re told.

The Wyze Bulb can be fully integrated with Wyze’s other smart home offerings and even plays nicely with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and IFTTT.

$8 or less for a smart bulb seems like a recipe ripe for disappointment but judging by the company’s previous offerings, Wyze could be the exception to that rule. Tech publications and YouTubers alike really seem to like the Wyze Cam, a $20 security camera that offers 1080p quality, two-way audio, 14 days of free cloud storage and more.

Assuming the bulb is even halfway decent, it could be a game-changer for smart lighting enthusiasts. $8 is incredibly affordable – heck, I paid more per bulb for my standard LED bulbs just a few years back and those have zero integrated smart features.

Those interested in pre-ordering the Wyze Bulb can do so through the Wyze app. The first shipments are expected to go out by late June.

Kind of reminds me of the ones that the "industry for the blind" used to sell, guaranteed for over 20,000 hours but when they burned out sooner and you tried to return them they would attack you with "you would do this to a blind person" ......

I just ordered a pack to replace all my outside LED lights with stupid integrated light sensors that supposed to turn on at dusk (which they usually do) and turn off at dawn (which they never do)!

Even with external motion sensor adapters, the performance is the same - they turn off around noon! Dumb sensor!

20,000 hours of operation based on 24 hours a day is 833 days or 2.3 years. Even if this bulb lasts 10,000 hours it is still worth buying it for 8 bucks because the energy savings based on its WiFi capability can surpasses its initial cost...

Seems a lot of money for the convenience of being able to turn on/off by using your iPhone.

I just tell my lazy *** kid to get off his rear end and switch off the lights for me. I don't even need to get the iPhone out.

You can configure times for it to turn off and on. You can set the intensity (dimming) and can also change the hue of white light (warmer or colder). You can group bulbs together and control them as one. If you have their new Wyze Sense, you can link them together so that the lights come on when motion is detected. If any of those features are worth $8 to you, then maybe it's worth it. Plus you get all of that in a long-lasting low-power bulb.

I got LIFX bulb which I bought for 40 bucks I believe.
Still works after one years.
And yes, sometimes I feel so sleepy that instead of reaching to turn off the light,
I turn it off on my phone.
These smart bulbs will become cheaper and cheaper.
But the quality ones would still stay
fairly high above the basic non smart led lights
