Xbox 360 controller and Windows?

I have heard that i can use my wired xbox 360 controller and i downloaded a software from Microsoft but it still wont connect the software says i need to connect it but its already pluged in via USB , any help guys? Thanks

Check the Break-away part of the Cable, I use mine to play games all the time. =D
