Cisco Systems is set to acquire Topspin Communications, a company which develops server fabric switches. There are currently 135 employees of the company, who will soon be joining Cisco's ranks.

Server fabric switches are designed to connect servers together into a grid, and then provide network and storage connectivity to that server grid. Topsin's products are targeted at data centers deploying grid and utility computing, clustered enterprise applications or server virtualization.

Cisco believes that through acquiring Topspin Communications it will be able to deliver specialized networking technology and services to customers, building on the technology that Topspin already provides.
