Hynix has now made available 512mbit GDDR4 DRAM for use in video cards. Announced on Friday, samples of the new RAM are being sent out soon with mass production aimed for next year. Offering substantial bandwidth increases over the current standard we see in most video cards today of GDDR3, the new modules have the potential to more than double the bandwidth and speed of modern cards. Especially with the introduction of SLI and other multi-GPU solutions, dual core CPUs and faster memory, modern applications are starting to take advantage of the performance increases, and this gives them plenty of room to grow.
