Although by this point we basically know everything there has to be known about the Phenom relaunch, AMD has made things official today with the immediate release of the Phenom X4 9850 Black Edition and the announcement of triple-core Phenom X3s.

The new flagship Phenom runs at a cool 2.5GHz and is no longer crippled by the TLB errata. And while that's good news, the 9850 still falls short of the 2.6GHz target AMD had put upon itself last year. Furthermore, the 9850 is a Black Edition processor meaning it's multiplier unlocked, but you will have to live with the considerably higher thermal envelope of 125W. But perhaps even more important than that, the Phenom is no Core 2 Quad killer, not even close.

As it had been anticipated, the new triple-core Phenom X3 processors 8400 (2.1GHz) and 8600 (2.3GHz) are not expected to appear in retail, at least not through official channels, and will only be available from OEMs initially.
