Gateway today gave its FX notebook line a nice update with the introduction of the new P-7811 FX, the company's first laptop based on Intel's Centrino 2 platform. Aimed at media enthusiasts and gamers, this 17-inch computer sports a 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and Nvidia GeForce 9800M GTS graphics with 512 MB of dedicated video memory.

There's only one configuration available, packing 4 GB of RAM and the 64-bit edition of Windows Home Premium to address the full amount of memory. The notebook ships with a 200GB 7,200rpm hard drive and a second available drive bay for expansion, plus a multi-format DVD burner and built-in webcam.

Connectivity options include 802.11n Wi-Fi, gigabit Ethernet, an HDMI 1.3 port, three USB 2.0 ports, Firewire and a 5-in-1 media card reader. All in all, the new P-7811 FX offers a good combination of hardware that's sure to please buyers. The original FX was a big hit, and with a $1,399 price tag this follow-up will likely follow suit.
