Qualcomm has announced a new VR development kit for its Snapdragon 835 platform in partnership with hand tracking company Leap Motion. The kit is a self-contained headset reference design that’s powered by the aforementioned chip, and uses cameras inside and outside to enable both eye tracking, as well as six degrees of positional tracking so you can move around in VR without any additional hardware.
The deal with Leap Motion also means Qualcomm's Snapdragon 835 platform will work with Leap Motion hand tracking, allowing people to interact with the virtual world with their bare hands.
"Technology works best when technology disappears," Leap Motion CTO David Holz said in a statement. "Untethered, mobile VR headsets with intuitive, hand-based interaction and position tracking bring a level of quality, immersion, and accessibility to VR unlike anything that's been seen before."
Other hardware specifications include a 2560 x 1440 screen, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of flash memory, a range of sensors (gyroscope, accelerometer, magnetic compass), Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and USB-C.
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 VR dev kit will be available to developers from Q2 2017. The company isn’t planning on selling this reference design to consumers, but rather working with third parties interested in building their own standalone VR products around the platform. Qualcomm noted that though the project is initially intended for VR headset manufacturers, it’s also looking at the AR space.
