HP ZBook 14u G6

Overview

Overall we liked the Zbook 14u G6. Its relatively light weight, small size, and robust power made for a very usable pro workstation with with understated good looks. The Zbook's value comes from its amenities rather than its absolute performance. If you're a 3D designer who needs certified drivers and is on the road a lot, then HP's mobile workstation should be on your short list of systems to check out.

With the ZBook 14u G6, Hewlett Packard delivers a compact, 14-inch mobile workstation. A Core i7-8565U processor and a Radeon Pro WX 3200 graphics core provide the necessary computing power. However, there's a weakness in terms of performance development. In this way, the processor is only able to deliver its single-thread performance fully to a large extent; the multithread performance remains well below full potential.

This laptop has a great balance of high-end processing power, lots of RAM, a great GPU, gorgeous screen, but all in a chassis that isn’t too thick and heavy. Yes, you can get more powerful mobile workstations, but they’re thicker and heavier. Yes, you can get thinner and lighter laptops, but they’re less powerful and capable. The ZBook 14U gives you some excellent high-end capabilities without breaking your back.

It's a shame the lid isn't more robust, the SIM card slot is not covered, and the screen doesn't hinge to 180 degrees. But this laptop's biggest problem is that if you run it at full tilt with the 4K screen at high brightness, it won't last long on battery power.

The 14-inch mobile workstation used to be considered a companion product to a desktop workstation, to be used when away from the office. This is probably one of the reasons why the form factor has never really taken off, contributing to a very small proportion of mobile workstation sales over the years.

The HP 14u G6 is more of an entry workstation notebook, while the ZBook x360 is up market with a bit more punch and price. The HP 14u G6 is a workstation aimed at entry to midrange users and brings great performance for that targeted audience. In our ESRI ArcGIS Pro tests, it produced solid scores and performed better than the x360 in several tests including having better Average FPS and Minimum FPS in two of the three tests.
