Advice for upgrading CPU

I currently have en eMachine T5048.

The processor is a Pentium 4 Running At 3.00 with an alloted 2gb of Ram.

I was wondering, if i could put in a faster processor and if that would help out much.

Right now im playing Starcraft 2 on High with No lag whatsoever during campaign missions.

I have an XFX Geforce 7600 GT Video Card also..

Any suggestions?

(i cant buy a new computer yet..too broke)

I don't think it would help too much, but i'd consider an e3300, but I can't find your motherboard and don't think it would support it.

Also, you capitalize a lot of random words.

Is this your system ? note that this machine has DDR RAM (T5048A I think is DDR2) and probably an Intel D101GGC (OEM) motherboard which suggests that some Pentium D9xx series CPU's are available. How much of an upgrade that is is dubious, and 2Gb RAM is going to limit the effectiveness of any upgrade.
Double check your machines specification and BIOS revision. If a BIOS flash is required, bear in mind that flashing a BIOS is far from a risk free operation and failed flash will likely result in your board becoming deceased.
If this information has not deterred you then...
Here's the eMachines driver/BIOS page. Click the "Drivers and Downloads" tab on the left sidebar, then Desktop -> T series -> T5048 -> BIOS (follow the instructions for BIOS flashing very carefully)

Also, you capitalize a lot of random words.
And some people post advice based on no research and a miniscule knowledge base...guess which kind of posting comment I would consider the bigger crime.

I Got a Bad Feeling about This Boss.....

I'm not getting a "T-5048 >A<" model listing.

Emachines is showing an ATI Xpress 200 chipset for the T-5048 so basically I'm not following this thread at all. Sorry for saying that.

The P-4 524 is basically the same as the 519 (in my T-5026) but with Hyperthreading. These are Prescott P-4s, and the 519 is only 32 bit, not sure about the 524.

I again have to say I don't know if the ATI 200 board is 64 bit or not, as even moving to a Smithfield would require that to be so.

Anyway, you couldn't go past a Smithfield,, if that. IMO that would be a waste of time trying to find one, as well as a waste of money if you did.

As DBZ has pointed out there is a fairly good chance of bricking the board with a BIOS update. And also, Emachines expects their boxes to go to the grave in the configuration they were sold in, so they're not really preoccupied with providing support for hardware upgrades.

Took a little digging because I was getting conflicting specs. Namely DDR and DDR2 as well as Intel D101GGC and Intel D102GGC2 boards (oh, how I hate OEM specifications!).
Buried in the eMachines driver notes it lists both T5048 and T5048A for utilities (this one for PowerDVD) but seperate release notes for A and non-A versions with regard to board drivers. It looks like eMachines updated the board, RAM and CPU, but have neglected to note the updated specification on their support site (I know, you're probably as shocked as I am). I can see why people just shake their head when confronted by a question regarding eMachines.

Here's what looks like a comprehensive list of eMachine mobo's and associated models, and the front page of where I started the info gathering that wasn't eMachines official site

CPUs are rarely ever upgraded really. To get any meaningful performance boost, the socket usually has changed, requiring a change in motherboard at the very least, and sometimes an upgrade to RAM (or change in RAM type).

Also, what do you expect the upgrade to do? CPU power barely makes a dent in games performance. And you are already playing one of the latest games on High. If you were lagging, upgrading your graphics card will show a much bigger improvement.

Also mentioned is your 2GB RAM. Would be beneficial to get it up to 4GB.

Thanks all, Minus the grammar Nazi?

I will just stay with my machine until it dies. If anything i'll just upgrade the video card.

"Achtung".......!

Well, we're dealing with a 32 bit CPU and a 32 bit OS. I suppose if you say so.

OK. you need to give HK a little latitude here. If the machine wasn't built the day before yesterday, he gets a tad confused. Well, a lot more than a tad.

I think you're right...I think some of the older LGA775 boards don't support newer processors.
Thats about it.

One more quick question, if i go ahead and purchase a new video card will that make any difference whatsover?

let's say i purchase a Ge-force GT X 460 Synergy Video Card - 768MB GDDR5, PCI-Express 2.0

Will this Behemoth create any difference? or the difference still held in my Processor and 2gb of Ram.

Yesterday I couldn't Spell. "English Teacher", Now I Are One....

I think I spelled "swinehunt" wrong, let me check on that.....

Ah yes, it's "Schweinhund".....

I know! ....I watch Hogan's Heroes....

Well that's just hurtful, that's all that is.:p

Watch it buster, that's 178 degrees of glorious, vivid, color accurate porn. The price was bouncing around, Buy.com had it for $399.95, then it was 418, Amazon was 417, then they dropped it to the $399.95. So, I said to myself, "F*** it", I can't stand the suspense of worrying about how much it will be tomorrow, I just gotta have it, and since I already had an account at Amazon........ The rest of the story is of woe and eventual debt consolidation......

I did check my mail, last night...I'll get back to you.....

And Tomorrow_Rains, don't buy one of those crappy old style Pentium Dual Core CPUs.

The monitor ? This would be the ZR24w ?
If so, can you let me/the forum know what your evaluation is. The same model is available here at arounf the same price point in relation to other IPS panels (i.e. much much cheaper, excepting the ViewSonic VP2365WB, which is 1920x1080)

This would be the "Smart Buy" version of that number. I say this because there are actually 2 "ZR24w" models...! See the second model here at Newegg; http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824176165

I think that the "Smart Buy" unit is 8 bit color, and the more expensive one is 12 bit.

Anyway, I ordered the "cheapie"..; http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003D1ADUU/ref=oss_product

Edit: I don't know what the deal is with this monitor, it has two different prices at Amazon and at the Newegg link I posted, the "manufacturer' page" goes to the "Smart Buy" page which shows a big reduction in list price. I guess Newegg didn't get the new pricing memo. According to a review at Amazon the Dell U2410 is the 12 bit panel.

I'll probably be only too happy to tell you about it as soon as I get it.

I know you're down under in NZ, so I have no experience with your shipping companies, but Amazon is a ritual unto itself. They offer free "Super Saver" Shipping, then start talking 5 to 8 days to even get it out their door. I think this is to to psyche you out of taking the deal.

Anyhoo, they're talking about shipping it the 5th or the 6th, so with 3 to 5 day shipping, I should have it by the middle to the end of next week. If you'll now cross your fingers also, that may help.

Anyway, I have a 24" "Soyo" which has an MVA panel, (believe it or not), and is really quite good, and I'm hoping that this unit is even a bit better.

Anything has to be better than this TN Samsung POS I'm using ATM. A half an hour of adjustment got most of the excess green out of it, but you still can't use it to any good end in the vertical position, since the angle of view is so truncated.

Dell also has a couple of low price new >>E<< IPS monitors. This 22" 16:10 http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/...etail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=bsd&cs=04&sku=320-7825

And a new 23" 1080P that they're always out of; (no sense in linking it ATM).

I think that the 22" I linked is the best of Dell's 3 new offerings.
