Computer says: hard drive clusters partly damaged! Please help..

By crystin
Jan 11, 2012
  1. I am attempting to fix my parent's home computer. This started yesterday (Tuesday) morning. Messages saying: hard drive clusters partly damaged and other notices were continually popping up. Also, all of their programs and files appear to be missing.

    I have read some of the other posts in the forum and suggested remedies and now realize I am in a bit over my head and may need some individual assistance. I see this is a problem that many have dealt with. As of right now, there are no longer and notices popping up or any "fake" attempts at getting me to pay for a anti-virus program.

    I need help getting the programs and files to re-appear on their computer. When I click start, all that appears is a folder for OpenOffice.org 3.0 and when I highlight it, it says the folder is empty. I am able to get on the internet through following a link in Windows Security Center. The deskstop is just a solid blue and all of their icons are gone as well.

    note: i'm unsure how to create and post the "logs" that many are asked to post on the thread, so including some general instructions on that would be helpful. :)

    Any help is more than greatly appreciated!!!

    Thank you in advance...

    -Crystin

    Broni-

    Thank you SO much for your help with this...

    Here is where I am currently at:

    Step 1: Downloaded and ran: COMODO. Remedied any viruses, etc. it encountered.

    Step 2: Downloaded and ran: Malwarebytes Anti-Malware as directed. Log will be posted in following post.

    *When running MBAM encountered: detected malicious process attempting to start and has blocked the execution attempt please select option below: Diable Protection, Ignore, Quarantine. I selected Quarantine. The following was also displayed: C:\PROGRAM FILES\GUFFINS\BAR\1.BIN\U4BRSTUB.DLLADWARE.MYWEBSEARCH (I know that Guffins is a game that my daughter downloaded to play...I'm thinking I should probably delete anything to do with the Guffins once I regain access to all programs and files.

    Step 3: Downloaded and ran: GMER as directed. Produced log and will be posted in a separate post as well.

    Step 4: Attempted to download DDS and the following was the result: Error Copying File or Foler Connot copy dds{1}: Access is denied
    Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use. I attempted this 3 times and each time had the same result. Looking for direction from you on how to proceed.

    Step 5: not yet attempted. assuming I should be successful with step 4 before beginning step 5?

    Logs for both programs are to follow.

    Thanks again for all your help!

    Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

    **Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
    1. Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
    2. Close any open browsers.
    3. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
      • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
      • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
      NOTE1. If Combofix asks you to install Recovery Console, please allow it.
      NOTE 2. If Combofix asks you to update the program, always do so.
      • Close any open browsers.
      • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
      • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
      • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.
    4. Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    5. When finished, it will produce a report for you.
    6. Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt"
    **Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall
    **Note 2 for AVG and CA Internet Security users: ComboFix will not run until AVG/CA Internet Security is uninstalled as a protective measure against the anti-virus. This is because AVG/CA Internet Security "falsely" detects ComboFix (or its embedded files) as a threat and may remove them resulting in the tool not working correctly which in turn can cause "unpredictable results". Since AVG/CA Internet Security cannot be effectively disabled before running ComboFix, the author recommends you to uninstall AVG/CA Internet Security first.
    Use AppRemover to uninstall it: http://www.appremover.com/
    We can reinstall it when we're done with CF.

    **Note 3: If you receive an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion", restart computer to fix the issue.

    Make sure, you re-enable your security programs, when you're done with Combofix.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    NOTE.
    If, for some reason, Combofix refuses to run, try one of the following:
    1. Run Combofix from Safe Mode (How to...)
    2. Delete Combofix file, download fresh one, but rename combofix.exe to yourname.exe BEFORE saving it to your desktop.
    Do NOT run it yet.
    Please download and run the below tool named Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) which may help allow other programs to run.
    There are 4 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
    Vista and Win7 users need to right click Rkill and choose Run as Administrator
    You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.
    Rkill.com
    Rkill.scr
    Rkill.exe
    • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
    • If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
    • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
    • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
    • If it does not work, repeat the process and attempt to use one of the remaining links until the tool runs.
    • Do not reboot until instructed.
    • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.
    Once you've gotten one of them to run, immediately run your_name.exe by double clicking on it.
    If normal mode still doesn't work, run BOTH tools from safe mode.
    In case #2, please post BOTH logs, rKill and Combofix.
    DO NOT make any other changes to your computer (like installing programs, using other cleaning tools, etc.), until it's officially declared clean!!!
    having problems conducting combofix as directed. Once unsuccessful, attempted in Safe Mode. combofix alerted that COMODO antivirus was on...I believe I have turned it off: anti-virus, firewall, and defense are all disabled, yet I am still alerted antivirus for COMODO is on. Windows securtiy center alerts me that firewall and antivirus are disabled, so I'm unsure how to continue with the disabling aspect. I am also alerted that I need to have an internet connection, but I am uncertain how to connect to the internet in safe mode??? When I go to network connections (where I know how to typically re-connect to the internet) there is nothing in the folder to connect from. I also believe you told me to never connect to the internet while running combofix, yet I am directed to?
    When attempting first attempts in 'normal mode', i received the following messages: windows cannot find 'NIRCMD' and c.bat is not recognized as an internal or external command.
    I'm wondering how to proceed???
    good news! all programs and files are now visible!!! after running combofix in safe mode, they re-appeared! YAY! Then, when restarting in normal mode, they were still there. Favorites have re-appeared in Internet Explorer and everything appears as it once was before.
    However, I'm sure you may have a few more last steps for me to complete...I will await your response for further instructions.
    Thank you SO SO SO much for all of your help and patience...I appreciate it so much (and so do my parents). I have spent over 14 hours working on this and it is quite a relief to see it return to "normal."
    Thanks again!
    Good news :)
    Now, run this Combofix fix in normal mode and allow recovery console installation.
    If you disable Comodo and Combofix issues any warning disregard it.
    1. Please open Notepad (Start>All Programs>Accessories>Notepad).
    2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:
    Code:
    File::
    c:\windows\A9R7321.tmp
    c:\windows\A9RE1CD.tmp
    ClearJavaCache::
    3. Save the above as CFScript.txt
    4. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs again, so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    5. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.
    6. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), please post the following reports/logs into your next reply:
    • Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
    • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows: OTL.txt and Extras.txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
    • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post them back here.
    Ok...I'm fairly certain I have completed your last set of instructions. The log is postecd above. I apologize for taking a few days to reply...the computer is at my parent's house and I have been unable to go over there until now.
    I will await your reply for further instructions. My parents have told me that internet explorer has been taking a few minutes to load. I instructed them to restart the computer and according to them that helped drastically, but they are still experiencing the internet to be a bit slower than before. I have not noticed this during the time I have been working on it, but thought maybe that information would be useful to you in some way.
    Thanks again for all of your help and PATIENCE!!! My parents and I really appreciate it! I'm so excited to be able to fix this for them.
    :)
    I don't see any OTL log.
    Please re-read my instructions.
    I posted that after you posted your new directions, but I was referring to the combofix stuff. I didn't realize at that time that you had new OTL directions for me. I have completed the scan and the logs will be posted after this post. Thanks again! :)
