Something to look forward to: Henry Cavill's love of The Witcher 3 game meant his role as Geralt of Rivia was well-suited. But the actor's next potential project, now that he'll no longer be playing Superman again, could be a match made in heaven: the tabletop miniature-loving king of the nerds is set to star in and executive produce a TV series adaptation of Warhammer 40,000 for Amazon.

The Hollywood Reporter writes that Amazon is in final talks for the rights to the game after months of discussions with owner Games Workshop.

In addition to being a fan of all things PCs and someone who builds his own rigs, Cavill has made no secret of his Warhammer obsession. The actor showed off his miniature-painting skills on Instagram back in 2020 and famously completed Total War: Warhammer 2 six times, as six different races. He also appeared on the UK's The Graham Norton Show to explain that Warhammer isn't the same as World of Warcraft while talking about the tabletop franchise's painting and gaming aspects.

It's been a busy few weeks for Cavill. The actor announced he would be leaving Netflix's The Witcher series after the third season, which airs this summer, with Liam Hemsworth taking over the role of the White Wolf. Cavill had also confirmed his return as Superman in the DC Universe movies, so it was assumed his departure from The Witcher was due to scheduling conflicts.

However, Cavill announced this week that he had been dropped as The Man of Steel following a meeting with DC Studio's new co-chairmen, James Gunn and Peter Safran. The pair are working on a new Superman project that focuses on Clark Kent's younger years, so Cavill won't be playing the character.

Amazon's Warhammer 40,000 series is still in the very early stages, so we might see Cavill in other projects before taking on Chaos Gods and Orcs in the grim darkness of the far future.

Back in 2019, Games Workshop announced it had teamed up with Big Light Productions to create a live-action TV series set in the 40K universe. The show was to follow Inquisitor Gregor Eisenhorn and his band of investigators, but we've not heard anything more since then.

They'd be wise to bring in 'astartesfilm' in some kind of advisory role (at the very least) for this. People with that kind of passion (and respect in the community) are what you need if you want this to be good to the point where it can satisfy both the hardcore fandom and people new to the whole thing alike.

Good for Henry though, looks like he gets to branch out. I fear for the worst for the next season of the Witcher - if only that was picked up by HBO instead it could have been epic.

Amazon has been somewhat hit-and-miss with their writing and editing lately IMHO. Expanse, Peripheral, and Good Omens were pretty solid, but Rings of Power wasn't. My partner is a fan of the Wheel of Time books, but couldn't get past the show's first episode.

I think it's a coin toss whether Studio Bezos can pull off a quality live action Warhammer. Man in the High Castle, also produced by Big Light, went off the rails. Remaining 'cautiously optimistic' might be best for the time being.

That first episode of the Wheel of Time on Amazon was VERY tough to stomach...just jarring, if you are a fan of the books. I read The Eye of the World...27ish years ago, and am such a fan of the books. Amazon decided to not make it for fans, but the woke crowd. Perhaps there's more money in that? But I wish they'd have made their own woke series instead of adapting a beloved ip.

I’ve read all the book series you listed above. Rings of power is a decent show and it’s leagues better than Wheel of Time which was downright awful. Also the expanse had amazing effects but the acting and direction were heartbreakingly bad. I agree on principal that Amazon is very inconsistent.

Oh no! They made a show featuring people of all colors and lifestyles! IT'S THE END OF THE WORLD!

Expanse had bad acting and direction? So you think it was in general a bad series? What? I'm in total disagreement with you when it comes to the Expanse.

Eisenhorn
That would be a bit close to some of his previous characters.so it may not interest him, pity.
Would be good as an intro and the writing I would expect to be more of an adaptation of the existing works
by Dan Abnett so thast would be a good start..

There are others though....Gaunt's Ghosts. series comes to mind..

Oh come on. At least Wheel of Time had Rosamund Pike, though she was the only good thing about it. I will say that the original books aren't really that special and are very much a young adult thing.

RoP is utter rubbish. There's nothing there to save it. Well, perhaps the Elrond-Durin relationship, but other than that it is horrible and really an affront to Tolkien's work.

This has a chance, as despite the flops above, Amazon have produced some good shows. Cavill is a massive nerd, specifically around 40k. So him not only starring, but being involved as a producer is promising. Vertigo Entertainment have some big, successful, and good films and some TV shows under their belt. They are currently producing God of War and Horizon (Zero Dawn) shows, but it remains to be seen how they turn out.

I don't think Big Light are producing it, Vertigo Entertainment are.

Sounds promising then, given their respectable folio. Perhaps there's hope then, given Cavill's passion and role as EP, along with Games Workshop's iron grasp over its intellectual property - less likely to stray from canon.

I loved the expanse books but the show was a bigger letdown for me than any other. I genuinely disliked all the actor choices and the direction was brutal.

Rosamund Pike is talented but the writing on that show is a total dumpster fire. They made every emmonsfield character uninteresting, childish and irrelevant to the story despite the fact they are supposed to be the main characters.
