Inactive System infected: ZeroAccess Rootkit Activity 4 and TidServ Activity 2

Hello,

I have a Vista SP2 machine (part of a small network) on which Norton Internet Security 2012 earlier today reported it had detected a threat requiring manual removal of ZeroAccess Rootkit Activity 4. A minute later, it reported detection of another threat requiring manual removal of TidServ Activity 2.

I proceeded to remove ZeroAccess Rootkit with the tool Symantec provided: Trojan.Zeroaccess removal tool. I was notified that the removal had been successful and so then I updated NIS and ran it in full. Nothing else was found. Then I went ahead and did the same with the other virus, Tidserv Activity 2: I used Symantec's recommended removal tool for Backdoor.Tidserv, FixTDSS.exe. This time around, after it scanned the whole system, it reported it couldn't find the virus. I nonetheless updated NIS and ran it in full one more time. Nothing was found this time either.

I still had a lot of problems with Google redirect and new windows that came from nowhere. I contacted Symantec three times, every single time they removed something but the issue kept coming back shortly after. I just feel they're giving me the run around and I just can't put up with that anymore.

I looked for a solution online and learned about Kaspersky's stand alone tool for this virus: TDSSkiller. In safe mode, I downloaded it, it scanned my system, found 1 infected file and cured it upon reboot.

It seemed everything had been taken care of as my pc seemed to have gone back to normal, no more redirected sites or new windows/tabs out of nowhere. So, just to make sure, I went back to safe mode and ran it again. To my surprise, it found 1 infected file this second time too. I proceeded in exactly the same way as before and supposedly got rid of it.

I then did the same exact thing for a third time: in safe mode, ran kaspersky's tool, with the same results: 1 infected file. This time I paid more attention and noticed that the infected file was afd.sys, the same one initially reported by NIS as being infected with ZeroAccess Rootkit. That very same one that supposedly had been successfully removed by Symantec's tool. Go figure.

I decided to run it one more time but this time not in safe mode. The scan came back with 1 infected file as well but this one was not afd.sys , it was different. It didn't allow me to copy and paste the info and I didn't write it down either.

Now, my computer has begun to act up again with redirecting sites (particularly when trying to find out solutions for this virus) and new windows coming out of nowhere. I'm at a loss and really don't know what to do. I fear the infection can ruin my work files, spread through the network and infect the other computer and my phone since the three devices all share docs.

Thanks so much for all your help.

Sincerely,

Paula

  • If you're stuck, or you're not sure about certain step, always ask before doing anything else.
  • Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those I suggest.
  • Never run more than one scan at a time.
  • Keep updating me regarding your computer behavior, good, or bad.
  • The cleaning process, once started, has to be completed. Even if your computer appears to act better, it may still be infected. Once the computer is totally clean, I'll certainly let you know.
  • If you leave the topic without explanation in the middle of a cleaning process, you may not be eligible to receive any more help in malware removal forum.
  • I close my topics if you have not replied in 5 days. If you need more time, simply let me know. If I closed your topic and you need it to be reopened, simply PM me.

Thanks so much, Broni. While awaiting for a reply I continued reading the website and I learned about all these steps, so I went ahead and performed them. Before pasting the logs let me tell you that my pc continues redirecting and opening unrequested new windows. Also, NIS just notified me that SONAR just resolved (quarantined) vsr31405.exe (vsr31405.exe) (high severity).

Now here are the logs. It seems I don't need to split this reply in parts because according to microsoft word this whole post is less than 40,000 characters long.

Another update is that the yahoo messenger icon that always shows in the system tray when I'm logged on has vanished. I know I'm logged on but the icon is MIA.

Thanks so much.

Download aswMBR to your desktop.
Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it.
If you see this question: Would you like to download latest Avast! virus definitions?" say "Yes".
Click the "Scan" button to start scan.
On completion of the scan click "Save log", save it to your desktop and post in your next reply.

NOTE. aswMBR will create MBR.dat file on your desktop. This is a copy of your MBR. Do NOT delete it.

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
  1. Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
  2. Close any open browsers.
  3. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
    NOTE1. If Combofix asks you to install Recovery Console, please allow it.
    NOTE 2. If Combofix asks you to update the program, always do so.
    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.
  4. Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  5. When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  6. Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt"
**Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall
**Note 2 for AVG and CA Internet Security users: ComboFix will not run until AVG/CA Internet Security is uninstalled as a protective measure against the anti-virus. This is because AVG/CA Internet Security "falsely" detects ComboFix (or its embedded files) as a threat and may remove them resulting in the tool not working correctly which in turn can cause "unpredictable results". Since AVG/CA Internet Security cannot be effectively disabled before running ComboFix, the author recommends you to uninstall AVG/CA Internet Security first.
Use AppRemover to uninstall it: https://www.techspot.com/downloads/5514-appremover.html
We can reinstall it when we're done with CF.
**Note 3: If you receive an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion", restart computer to fix the issue.
**Note 4: Some infections may take some significant time to be cured. As long as your computer clock is running Combofix is still working. Be patient.

Make sure, you re-enable your security programs, when you're done with Combofix.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
NOTE.
If, for some reason, Combofix refuses to run, try one of the following:
1. Run Combofix from Safe Mode (How to...)
2. Delete Combofix file, download fresh one, but rename combofix.exe to yourname.exe BEFORE saving it to your desktop.
Do NOT run it yet.
Please download and run the below tool named Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) which may help allow other programs to run.
There are 4 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
Vista and Win7 users need to right click Rkill and choose Run as Administrator
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.
Rkill.com
Rkill.scr
Rkill.exe
  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
  • If it does not work, repeat the process and attempt to use one of the remaining links until the tool runs.
  • Do not reboot until instructed.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.
Once you've gotten one of them to run, immediately run your_name.exe by double clicking on it.
If normal mode still doesn't work, run BOTH tools from safe mode.
In case #2, please post BOTH logs, rKill and Combofix.
DO NOT make any other changes to your computer (like installing programs, using other cleaning tools, etc.), until it's officially declared clean!!!
I'm having a lot of problems here while trying to ready the PC to run ComboFix. I have to disable NIS, which I already did, but ComboFix still kept detecting it. So, I uninstalled it but ComboFix kept detecting it. I then uninstalled Norton Power Eraser and all other Norton or Symantec files and finally, also downloaded and ran Norton Removal Tool. All that for nothing because ComboFix still finds NIS. I don't know how to procede from here. My PC is getting worse as now it just won't access the internet using Firefox, my main browser, and now there's no antivirus installed.
I'm sending you this msg from my phone. What shall I do now? Thanks so much again.
Help please! Stuck in the process and virus is getting worse...
As a follow up, I'm stuck in the process of eliminating virus. Per previous instructions, before using ComboFix, I disabled and had to uninstall NIS. Somehow Combofix keeps detecting it and so, I can't proceed. In the meantime virus is gaining power as I no longer have access to internet through Firefox. Currently, computer is turned off and I'm afraid to turn it back on bec virus could have gotten worse. I'm using internet on cell phone to communicate. I need some help please! Thanks so muapplech in advance.
Thank you Broni! I was typing the previous post when you sent me yours. I'll run Combofix right now. Thanks.
Broni, Combofix is running at this time but I noticed it didn't disconnect the internet. Oh, I see it just finished and is asking to reboot...
No problem with the fact that Combofix didn't disconnect the internet?
Broni, ComboFix log report just popped up and so when I tried to save it by opening the save as dialog, the computer froze. What shall I do now?
I'm trying to restart the comp but after I put in my password to get it started, I just keep getting a blue screen saying Windows shut down due to some error. It happened twice and now I'm afraid of trying it for the third time.
Turn computer off.
Wait 1 minute.
Try to start it again.
If still a problem, try Safe Mode.
Broni, I did what you asked me and now upon starting (after entering my password), I got this notification on a black screen:
Location is not available
C:\Windows\system32\configuration\SystemProfile\Desktop refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a hard drive on this computer or on a network. Check to make sure that the disk is properly inserted or that you are connected to the internet or your network and then try again. If it still cannot be located, the information might have been moved to a different location.
(My comment is that I know for a fact that the internet is up and running because I'm using wifi on the phone now. )
Sorry Broni for delaying but had to go to work and just got back.
Computer boots all the way till I have to enter my login password. At that time, once I enter it, the computer seems to be processing the info and then the screen goes black and that notification I included previously comes along.
So happy you're still there. I'm going nuts here. Haven't tried Safe Mode. Will do that right now. Will be back in a few.
