WOF: What's your browser homepage and why?

[Weekend Open Forum] In the beginning there was Yahoo, the ubiquitous homepage of choice for millions of Web users in the late 90s. Coming from an era when Web portals were hot properties and ISPs nearly forced you to use their own, many continue to devoutly rely on Yahoo as their start page to see what's new on the Internet and the world.

Over the years however many different options and trends have come and go on how to start your browsing sessions. From Google's simplistic search box approach to RSS-inspired personalized homepages like Netvibes and Pageflakes. Most recently social networks have elevated themselves as a source of breaking news and an effective way to connect with those around you. The browser itself has also impacted how you can start every session. For example, you can have it remember what tabs were open last time and take it from there, or you could set it up to open nothing (about:blank).

While we certainly encourage you to add TechSpot to your shortlist of first things to see when you browse the Web every day, in this week's WOF we ask you, what's your browser homepage and why? If you want to throw a brief story on how you used to code your own homepage filled with your favorite links back in the day (I did!) you won't hear us complaining. Discuss.

  1. I've been using www.alltheweb.com for years now. Why? Partly because it has a much better layout for picture viewing than google, it pretty much comes up with anything you might be looking for and because I tire of google this and google that. Yahoo's www.alltheweb.com is just as good and possibly better.

  2. http://myfav.es/

    Really useful page.

  3. iGoogle... packs my gmail, twitter, weather, google chat, and a few other things all in one handy page

  4. Yahoo.com, I like they're random news articles and it allows for easy email access for me. Also I'll almost never type in a website in the address bar so Yahoo's search is perfect even though it's not as good as google which I have in the upper right corner of my browser. (Firefox)

  5. I just use Chrome's "new tab" page. The only reason I don't just use a blank tab is that this page shows recently closed tabs, so if I accidentally close something I can find it quickly again.

  6. For security purposes, I use a home brew page stored on my hard disk. It is just a 3 line message so it opens fast. If a browser hijacks my home page, I know about it instantly. about.blank can be used to deliver malicious code, so I don't use it. Firefox already has a search bar, which eliminates the need to open a home page dedicated to searching.

  7. blank page

A newtab in Google Chrome offers me what i need

thumbs of most frequent visits and a bar full of bookmarks alone makes me feel i am in the the internet

  8. Bing.com so snappy and happy. Internet surfing i start by ie sidebar, it's fastest way..

  9. I use the SpeedDial in SRWare Iron. Simply because it looks so damned cool and has all the important stuff like this very site right there and you can use image URL's to give it an even cooler look for all the links :-D

  10. iGoogle is pretty awesome. I have Gmail, stocks, news stories and erm joke of the day. Also with a daily changing theme.

  11. I've used and loved Google as my homepage since I first had the interweb =P

It's simple, fast and easy, and I really like the themes they put up on there from time ti time for example Christmas or Halloween =)

What exactly is so different that makes it better? The images are laid out in the same way. I prefer the Google image search because editing the search preferences is so much easier since it's right on the page in the left hand side bar. No need to click a link just to tell it to search for a certain picture size.

  13. I guess it's just the extra step. For example... This pic is what you get after you click on the image in alltheweb - [link]

This is what you get in Google - [link]

....then you have to click on the pic again to see it full size. Which for the occasional pic is fine, but if your looking for something and going through a lotta pics, I find it irritating. Then you have to double click to go back too.

So in a nutshell, it's more time consuming. You are right about the convenience of the search options in google.

  14. igoogle, because i have there everything i want

  15. google (Firefox start) as my main along with some tabs.

  16. Opera's speed dial. I kinda hate that thing by now though, as it kind of limits the scope of sites I visit almost only to what I've got in speed dial. I often find myself just clicking through these sites over and over again even though I've already seen them.

  17. Google is my homepage, its light and fast.

  18. 1.Techspot-Been a fan since the beginning.

2.Gamespot-Poor game reviews as of late are making me re-think

3.Gamespy-Been a fan since the beginning

4.Anandtech-Don't like their new style at all

    5.ESPN-My boxing and MMA spot

I use Firefox, Chrome and Opera as of late.

  19. I use black-google.bpled.com as my home page.

  20. I use google.com because it loads fast and i also search something..

  21. I set my home page to that of the ISP from which I am getting service.

This tells me immediately if I have a useful connection or something's wrong.

If I can't get the ISP h.p., then there's little hope of getting anything else

  22. my.yahoo has been mine for years. With the advent of tabbed browsers, I have added Techspot, Facebook, Gizmodo, Tomshardware, boards.ign, woot, and gamespot.

  23. Years ago, I created my own home page with icons to sites I visit daily and I'm still using it.

  24. Google - quick loading and handy.

  25. I use google Chrome so the top page link is my home page. But when I first open Chrome Google and Yahoo! mail are my pages that open
