The Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) is to be succeeded by UEFI. The BIOS is an integral part of any computer since it initializes a machine before the OS takes over, but it has changed little in 25 years and was never designed to with the long term in mind. UEFI will mean faster boot times, various design enhancements, a mouse-controlled user interface, and many other improvements. The video embedded below is just a taste of what's to come.
Hopefully we'll see some standardization for UI navigation; it would be a shame if every single UEFI worked and looked differently (like today's BIOS does). Experts are predicting that UEFI will start dominating BIOS in 2011. Whether that will happen or not is yet to be seen, but having and industry leader like Asus pushing forward certainly helps.

I got to thinking and i got a little worried. If this new BIOS replacement is too standardized, then the viruses may start targeting it. If your UEFI get corrupted, I would bet that you would be pretty screwed. I once had to upgrade the bios firmware on a computer. The tool ran with still in windows. I don't know, its just worrisome.

Now that's awesome. Thats really really awesome. I can't wait for UEFI to grow in to the MB manufacturing process, and come as normal thing. BIOS is already pretty boring, and a bit hard for everyone to understand (Especially the overclocking). I'm still running my i7 920 at the stock clock for over half a year, cause i'm afraid to ruin it while overclocking in the not so handy bios menu! Can you believe that?

I hated that my Laptop's BIOS cant boot from external drive and the feature couldn't be installed, I hope in uefi it is more flexible, not just the interface,

I kinda feel sad, in 2012 we might have to say good bye to 2 dear friends, Mr.HDD and Mr.BIOS,
Cant wait for my next upgrade!

i am affraid that this will be a new place to have bugs and instability due to every vendor would like to have its own UI

Have this in a motherboard ROM, so it is impervious to a Microsoft operating system infection ... It would run before a operating system was started... I certain hope this is not a Microsoft or Intel design being adopted/licensed and built by Asus.
Asus was a very large manufacture of many Intel Motherboards in the past...
The consumer grade Motherboard Bios needs to be independent of Operating Systems, my only major concern...

Now if they would only make it removable like the old bios chips were, and standardize the module plug so when they come out with UEFI2 (and you know they will) you can just remove the old one and replace it without buying a new Mobo.

Tried on a P5Q Deluxe motherboard and though it looked good it moved slowly and sometimes it "forgot" to remember the settings. It's beta from 1 year now and it's bad Asus stopped providing software support for a pretty damn popular motherboard.

Hi All, Some very interesting comments, especially about Virus Concerns, I have noticed that some motherboard Manufacturers (EVGA and more you know of) still say that flashing the BIOS via a floppy disc is "the preffered method" ??? whats a floppy disc? and with 16Gb pensticks who wants to know?
I think booting into Crysis is a bit silly (+1 kudos for comment lol) or looking like an iphone is also a bit sad when people invite there friends to watch there BIOS screens (only something Sheldon would do in Big Bang).
What does it for me though is the implementation for MB's to negate the 2.2> Gb restriction (Windows 7 x64 can handle HDD's around 256Tb each) so the only bottleneck as such is the BIOS. It is without a doubt that with Hitatchi announcing there 3Tb drives and Western Digital also announcing (but with some pci SCUSSI adaptor to negate BIOS) the future is definately here and UEFI has to be adopted, those that wont will be left behind, so.......
Im getting my coat,,, will the last person in the AMI BIOS workshop please turn off the light on there way out.
