Seagate ships 1.5 billionth drive, celebrates with giveaway

Seagate's been pretty dang busy lately, duking it out with Western Digital for the title of top HDD manufacturer. So busy in fact, that the company nearly forgot to celebrate its 1.5 billionth drive sold! The milestone was reached on October 20, only 2.5 years after Seagate cracked the 1 billion mark in April 2008. Selling 500 million hard drives in 2.5 years is quite the accomplishment, considering the fact that it took 29 years to ship its first billion.

Seagate said that its first billion drives equated to 79 million terabytes, enough space to store 158 billion hours of digital video or 1.2 trillion hours of music. With an extra 500 million units under its belt, those figures have ballooned to approximately 118.5 million terabytes, enough for 237 billion hours of digital video or 1.8 trillion hours of music. At its current sales rate, the company expects to move its 2-billionth drive within the next 2 years.

To celebrate its achievement, the company is giving away one 1.5TB GoFlex ultra-portable external hard drive to three winners. To enter, post a comment on Seagate's blog post by 5PM PT, November 15. Alternatively, you can snail mail your name, address and contact information to: Seagate 1.5 Billion Shipped Blog Sweepstakes c/o Corp. Communications, 920 Disc Drive, Scotts Valley, CA 95066. Names will be drawn on November 19.

  1. My seagate still has no bads and it's 2-3 years old. Congrats Seagate!
Yeah right, super. The WD "Caviar Blue" OEM drive (160GB OEM), in my Emachines T-5026 is pushing 6, (5 yrs 9 mos), and still going strong. You don't know if your drive is 2 or 3 years old? That's really not long enough to forget when you got it.

All I had to do was put down my name and email address to write a post, didn't even use my last name. If you win, the only info you will be giving is your address, so they can send you the hard drive. I do agree that the chances of winning will be high but that's with anything you try to win.
Listen, any personal info for this nonsense is too much. This "giveaway" is still astoundingly cheesy. It probably cost them more in man hours to announce it, than it did for the HDDs to give away. And they got those drives for manufacturer's cost, which is probably half of dealer cost.

Get back to me when you win. In the meantime, why not try subtracting 3 from 1.5 billion. I think the answer's still 1.5 billion, but I can be imprecise at times.

Do you two have your tickets to China bought yet?

  2. congratulations seagate! the last seagate harddrive that i bought was more than 10yrs ago hoping that the prices here in my country would drop, as most retailers here sell wd drives a lot cheaper and have 2 yrs store warranty as opposed to the 1 yr store warranty given

edit: oh and by the way so far i'm still looking to buy at least a 2Tb drive... to replace my very old 250gb sata 1 wd harddrive

    cheers

Here in the US of A, Seagate drives sell @ 15 to 20% less than what a comparable WD would bring. This is from Newegg's sale Email prices.
