Weekend Open Forum: How much did your case cost?

Although some enthusiasts are willing to splurge on extravagant computer cases, many shun the notion of spending $200+ on a glorified metal box. That's understandable with when you compare the features of products such as Cooler Master's $60 HAF 912 and $200 HAF X. Both offer the same core functionality: a home for your components.

Expensive cases typically have superior cable management, stock cooling and accessibility, but budget chassis owners aren't missing out on much. Cables can be hidden with some imagination and zip ties, fans can be upgraded if necessary, and unless you swap hardware frequently, fancy tool-less mechanisms won't be saving you much time.

The difference between a $60 and $200 chassis often amounts to some extra space, aesthetics such as interior paint, and a simplified installation process. Our question is: are those features worth a price premium to you? How much did you pay for your current case? To get us rolling, I'm using the dated Thermaltake Tai-Chi and Julio has the HAF 932.

  1. Nearly 2 years old: Antec P193 (£130) with an Antec CP-850 PSU (£70).

  2. I saw the HAF 912 really cheap (in Chile South America) and was going to buy it but then they went out of stock... so I had to look for something close in caracteristics and price. Adding the fans and bla bla to check the price, ended buying a CoolerMaster Scout Storm amazing chassis.

  3. Lancool PC-K62. wouldnt change it for the world $129cdn

  4. My Gigabyte Mars case was $150 when I got it two years ago.

I have a Thermaltake Element T, which costs around 70$. Mind you, I did not actually pay for it: I won it in a contest.

Hey I got my case for free too! I stole it.

  6. I bought a coolermaster elite 430 for $50

  7. I got the HAF X. The way I figure, It looks nice enough to use for many builds down the road. If I rebuild it with new hardware 4 times, it'll be like I spent 50$ per build for a case. Get something nice that I really like and I figure the investment will be worth it.

  8. i have an antec 900 very nice and cool case paid just over $120 for it but i am about to upgrade to the Silverstone Fortress FT02 i believe it is one of the best case designs out right now and the most efficient.

  9. Nice Topic.

I refuse to pay more than $50-$60 for a case. I don't care for a case that looks like a Tonka truck or contains a laser light show. Prefer Quality and Function with minimalistic styling. Cooler Master Centurion 590 was the first case I ever bought, for $50. I gave that computer away to a relative.

Currently have the Cooler Master Centurion 534+ which I got for less than $30, free shipping. Both CM cases are excellent.

For my HTPC, I went with an InWin BT610T with 300w PSU included for less than $60 with free shipping. Also the Apex TX-381 is a great basic case, which I picked up for $25 free shipping.

  10. Cooler Master HAF 932 - $200+ almost 3 years ago.

  11. HAF 932 $150.00

    Antec DF-85 $150.00

    Sunbeam Tech AC-9 Acrylic $89.00

    Coolermaster Elite 530 $39.00

  12. I am about to switch from a TJ07 to a FT02. TJ07 was a nice case but it vibrated like crazy with my setup, the side panels didn't fit properly, and the stock air cooling was pretty rubbish.

  13. I purchased a CM storm Scout for around 100$ and it is a BEAST of a case. I have a Thermaltake Frio heatsink that just fits in the case, and I had 2 5770s running in crossfire but I just recently switched to a 6870 last week. If you're planning on liquid cooling it WOULD work but its only a mid case and there wouldnt be very much room.

5 out of 5 for this mid case.

  14. £90 for a coolermaster 690 II advanced, a few niggles with it

uneven feet, unsheathed fan cables, fiddly removal of the front filters , poorly positioned MB cutout and to tight a space for cable management behind the MB

  15. My Antec P180 mini (the black one) cost $69 when it was on Newegg. Now they only have the white one, and every other onlien vendor either stopped carrying the case, has it on extreme backorder, or has it priced extremely high. Such a shame for the best case I've ever owned.

  16. I got a Fractal Design R2 and it's amazing for the cheap price. R3 is out now.

Do you guys get this in the US?

    Check it out yourself...

  17. Every time I'm in need of a new case, I just head to the junk store and offer $5 for old towers with most the components missing. The most I've ever paid and I've gotten a few nice cases for good deals.

  18. Black AZZA Fantom 900 ATX Mid Tower Beautiful case excellent reviews on johnyguru you would think its an 200 dollar case but with rebate about 70

Wow... I'm surprised at the poll options and also the results!

My case cost me US$1800. Though that was with a phase change included. it was US$1000 without the phase.

Yea the poll results are kind of.... wait, you paid what?

Antec 300 all the way :P cost me just shy of £50, or around $79 - I have sharkoon silent eagles fitted all round too.

I'm with you on this one. Bang for the buck, the Antec 300 is unbeatable.

  20. I have the Cooler Master CM690. Bought it about 3 years back for around Rs 4500, that's over $90. Yeah, things are pretty damn expensive here. :-)

  21. I got an Antec 300 for $30, which was the bargain of the year. Spent another $15 or so on fans and I have the perfect case for my needs.

  22. Coolermaster Haf 922 with red LEDs for $99. So far so good.

  23. Mine is a cooler master CM 690....has a good room for water cooling ma i5 760 using a corsair H70 and for cross firing my radeon hd 6870 card....

  24. I like my Lian Li maybe around $180. Like that it's an aluminum case with a side widow.

  25. I have a CM HAF-932 which is great.

I also have a very expensive Mountain Mods case that allows me to place two motherboards, 4 PSU, and I have 4 triple radiators mounted as well. It is a great case for water cooling and room, but cable management is a nightmare compared to a full tower.
