Weekend Open Forum: How much did your case cost?

Although some enthusiasts are willing to splurge on extravagant computer cases, many shun the notion of spending $200+ on a glorified metal box. That's understandable with when you compare the features of products such as Cooler Master's $60 HAF 912 and $200 HAF X. Both offer the same core functionality: a home for your components.

Expensive cases typically have superior cable management, stock cooling and accessibility, but budget chassis owners aren't missing out on much. Cables can be hidden with some imagination and zip ties, fans can be upgraded if necessary, and unless you swap hardware frequently, fancy tool-less mechanisms won't be saving you much time.

The difference between a $60 and $200 chassis often amounts to some extra space, aesthetics such as interior paint, and a simplified installation process. Our question is: are those features worth a price premium to you? How much did you pay for your current case? To get us rolling, I'm using the dated Thermaltake Tai-Chi and Julio has the HAF 932.

  1. went with the Corsair Graphite 600T.... $149 with rebate. no regrets. great case..

  2. Newest case is a Coolermater HAF 922 for $99 delivered.

  3. Why is almost everyone here buying cases that looks so ridiculous ?(HAF-series f.e. looks like a transformer toy-thing, i mean unless you are 10 years old)

I spent about 100$ (which isnt much) on an decent Antec P180 Mini and although its a midi-case it offers enough space for an 3.5" Hot-Swap Bay, an SSD, a 2 drive Raid0, DVD-Rom, Liquid Cooling and a big Graohics card (HD6950) and theres plenty of room left (for 2nd GPU or even more HDDs)....

And wtf is "i prefer to spend the money on the real hardware" ??? it's like buying an old rusty car and putting a 500BHP V8 in it.... there is no sense of doing so, it only makes everyone on the street think you're an *****.....

  4. At last, somebody to argue with, wholeheartedly...!

Well, many here are gamers, many here are young people, and many here are both. Granted, the HAF series are very mechanical looking, but doesn't that offer a continuation or perhaps completion of the theme, considering which games are being played?

The CM Storm "Scout" has received several favorable mentions, including one from me. It's "styled after military weapons", (CM hype), but I think it's got just the right amount of meanness, style and function. I don't take it to LAN parties, but I do move it from time to time. So, the handle's not only "groovy", it's a nice thing to have pursuant to function.

Oh happy day! So, at post #104, a guest drops by to tell us what we all should have bought, so that we all could be just like him! Thanks so much. I knew when I walked into the store to buy my Antec 900, I should have said, "gimme one o' them thar rectumtangular boxes wif a door on it"....

Well, I'd spend $100.00 less on a case, if I needed that same money on a video card, at the very least, in the short term.

As to your little analog, I live in the city, and I see so many POS cars with 15" subwoofers and $2000.00 sets of rims, which seems even more ridiculous to me! Call it, "all case and no guts".

As to the "rusty old car", with the "500 HP engine", we used to call them, "sleepers", and it was great fun driving one of them, then ripping some clown driving his daddy's new car a "new one" with it.

  5. Lite-On FS020

Workstation case from the 90'ties and with 3 * 120's Fan an absolute miracle for its time.

Still able to silently cool a quad with Trifire.

    Downside; it weighs 15 Kilo.

  6. HAF 922 for $89 CAD

  7. i have a laptop xD )

  8. I crammed my PC in my specs into a $20 case. Works great but I need a bigger one for sure.

  9. Previous mid tower case was a Lian-Li PC50 which I think was about £90 years ago.

Then a few Shuttle units usually ~£300, but thats case, heatpipe cooling for CPU, psu and motherboard in one, so not that pricey. My current Corsair Graphite 600T is the most I've ever spent on a case, £130 (round about $208). Other than it not being aluminum and therefore a bit heavy I'm very please with it, tool less, cable management, quiet 200mm case fans, quality manufacturing. Can see it being used for a few more PC builds in the future.

  10. Bought one of those cheap windowed ATX cases in 2005. Just one of those black ones that looks cool but that's made out mediocre materials and with average workmanship. Why? Because a $40 case like this will be fine as long as the ATX form factor is around. I don't need some super leet $150 case.

Best yet the case supports 5 case fans. You don't need some Antec to have good cooling and decent looks.

  11. $30 case back in 2006. money goes for backup for failing mobo / gpu or etc
