Weekend Open Forum: Where do you buy your PC games?

According to stats released by NPD last summer, digital game downloads surpassed retail stores in terms of units sold. During the first six months of 2010, gamers bought 11.2 million digital PC games versus 8.2 million physical units. That trend is spurred by the incredible prices and convenience offered by services such as Steam. Valve's digital marketplace reportedly earned $1 billion in 2010 and the company claims it's more profitable per employee than Google and Apple.

With that kind of cash flow, it's no surprise that a ton of competitors are scrambling establish a presence in the digital PC market. Just this week, Microsoft promised to improve its Games for Windows Live platform. Given this year's intimidating list of anticipated titles, we thought it would be a great time to ask: where do you buy your PC games? Steam undoubtedly earns the bulk of my game purchases, but I won't ignore a good deal elsewhere, especially on new releases.

  1. i'm from costa rica i'like steam ,iloved

  2. Online mostly. Either through the company or steam. My store because I get a discount. Alaska is small for these things :-(

  3. Steam mostly, with Amazon for the games I physically want to own.

For me it's just Steam and Apple's App Store for casual gaming. I don't buy games that often, so I haven't tried many other digital distribution platforms besides GOG once or twice, and I can't remember the last time I bought a boxed game.

  5. Steam.bought cataclysm from gamestation as it was a fiver less than direct from blizzard. Bought bc2 from blockbusters. Bad mistake. Doesn't update through steam and doesn't show I am playing to my friends in the same way. Steam used to suck bad when it first came out but its much better nowadays. Valve done a good job.

  6. Most of my titles I buy through Steam, not only for great sale prices but to support a company that still caters heavily to the PC crowd. I've used D2D a time or two as well. Last brick and mortar purchase was Bioshock 2 at GameStop.

  7. Always boxed, either Amazon, Play or some other.

Somehow I don't like being dependent on Steam or the likes, and on release, it's always cheaper to buy there than online. At least so far, for the games I want.

  8. STEAM...just bought 3 games tonight!

  9. I used to buy from stores, but recently in the past year or so I've been buying online.

Steam, and Blizzard store. The reason? It can be cheaper online--I got Half-Life 2 for $10 on Steam.

Another reason is that I don't ever have to worry about losing the CD or Key, all the downloads are available with my online account if I ever need to re-install.

  10. When buying new releases I usually go retail as it tends to offer more benefits. Most boxed copies I will get from either Amazon or Newegg. On rare occasions I will buy from a B&M like Target, Wal-Mart or even K-Mart as they sometimes have decent discounts that aren't matched online.

For digital purchases my choice is usually Steam, especially during sales as they tend to offer the best overall deals. However I also buy from Impulse and GOG. I rarely buy new releases digitally though as they are same priced as retail.

  11. The Pirate Bay.

Paying for things is so 2006.

  12. hello ...

Steam, D2D, Impulse, GoG, Gamersgate, Blizzard store for all online purchase & I do a lot / month.

Ebay, hmv, local stores for disc-based (rare)

    cheers!

  13. I used to be all about the physical media - but lately I've started to shift to Steam... and since I don't want to deal with multiple downloadable sources I only deal with Steam. Just wish there weren't as many limits to the titles you can import into steam from physical media.

  14. I buy mainly from Steam but occasionally i buy from stores but that is becoming more rare for me

  15. Usually Steam or Direct2Drive, but I also buy from best buy, or Gamestop(ew) if I want it for a midnight release.
