Microsoft will be abandoning the glossy outer shell on select Xbox 360 consoles in favor of a black matte finish. The announcement was made official on the blog of Major Nelson, director of programming for Xbox Live. Microsoft’s gaming console is currently available in two flavors: a 250GB unit with a glossy finish and a 4GB model featuring a matte black surface.
Nelson used the opportunity to debunk a rumor that had been circulating leading up to the announcement. Microsoft will not continue to manufacture the glossy 360 alongside the new matte-finish system.
This doesn’t affect the development of special edition consoles, however. The limited edition Gears of War 3 console and the Star Wars console were cited as two examples of upcoming glossy console bundles.
The transition has already started and new consoles will be available in the coming weeks. If you have your heart set on a glossy system, now is the time to pull the trigger before they are permanently pulled from store shelves.
No official reason was given for the change, but one could speculate that it’s not cost-efficient to manufacture two different outer shells for what is otherwise an identical product. The hard drive capacity is the only difference between current 250GB and 4GB models.
Microsoft redesigned and announced a new Xbox 360 at E3 2010. The slim console uses a 45nm SoC called "Vejle" that crams a CPU and GPU onto one piece of silicon. It has 372m transistors, is 50% smaller and draws 60% less power than the original 360's 90nm CPU/GPU combo.

Genuine question here...Does it still sound like a vaccum cleaner because the one that sits under my tv collecting dust on the outside would do a self clean if i ever switched it on.
Oh and it was supposed to be one of the quiet, later versions but it`s crazy loud and just annoyed the hell out of me when that disc spun up.
must admit though, i`m a pc gamer 99.9% of the time so cant tollerate chit that sounds like it`s made in Hong Kong!

If the developers didn't try to make the aging hardware act all modern there wouldn't be a problem. I very much would prefer if they didn't focus so much on graphics but instead on level design and gameplay, pity that shiny screenshots seem more important.
There are a few pearls among all those corridor crawlers/shooters though so the situation isn't completely hopeless.

I've got one of these and they are much quieter, install the game onto the hard drive and it is near silent.

If u have the newer version of the xbox it is only loud when u have a disc in it but if the game is installed its more silent.Also im worried about the tempature of my xbox slim because somtimes its around 90 degrees.

You have to broaden your contempt to the rest of the Pacific Rim and China proper.

Incidentally, I think Hong Kong's chief export is martial arts "wire" movies.

okay i bought thee 360 on day one and now like eight years or so later ive bought two more for my family but after my first on broke about eighteen times and counting i realised that it wasnt a bad system at all especially when microsoft made it way too easy to open it up and replace all the components to my liking and now i run just about any computer game i want on my xbox and as long as i download the xbox online format and pc graphics and such its just amazing. the only problem iv encountered is that the damned bastards at microsoft took my account and saw what i was doing and now i cant get achievements and i cant change my zone and all it says is cheater but oh well my shits amaazing

How did this go from a topic about a new console shell to "Hey lets all hate microsoft and their shit box"? almost no one cares about PC games, who wants to sit in front of a monitor for hours on end playing with a mouse and keyboard? nobody! so get over it PC nerds because as long as there is console available, 90% of gamers will buy it.
