Modern Warfare 3 shatters one-day entertainment sales records

The latest installment in the Call of Duty franchise has become the biggest entertainment launch of all time, smashing the previous record set by its predecessor a year ago. Modern Warfare 3 brought in over $400 million in revenue in 24 hours, selling 6.5 million copies in the US and UK.

Call of Duty: Black Ops generated $360 million on opening day last year, again setting a new record that was previously held by a Call of Duty title. In 2009, Modern Warfare 2 sold roughly 4.7 million units in the first 24 hours available, good for $310 million in revenue.

"We believe the launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is the biggest entertainment launch of all time in any medium, and we achieved this record with sales from only two territories," said Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotickt. "Other than Call of Duty, there has never been another entertainment franchise that has set opening day records three years in a row. Life-to-date sales for the Call of Duty franchise exceed worldwide theatrical box office for 'Star Wars' and 'Lord of the Rings,' two of the most successful entertainment franchises of all time."

At this rate, it’s pretty much a given that Modern Warfare 3 will set a new record for five-day sales worldwide. Black Ops did the same by earning $650 million, beating all theatrical box office, book and video game sales records for the same time period.

While the records are impressive, it can be a bit unfair to compare a video game launch to other entertainment releases based on revenue alone. A video game typically sells for $50-60 while a movie, for example, will only set you back $10-15 and many books are under $20.

EA’s Battlefield 3 launched late last year to generally positive reviews from critics. In a conference call to investors, EA CEO John Riccitiello stated that Battlefield 3 had shipped 10 million units within a week of its release, making it the fastest-selling game in EA history.

  1. whats funny to me is how all these punks called people who actually like the game "kids" "looser's" "posers" etc etc... if some one likes it they like it no need for everyone to get their panties in a bunch and ***** about it all over the forums ey. it's like a lot of other things in the world which you just can't control. just go with the flow if you like BF just play it and enjoy it ... if you like COD just play it and enjoy it. damn if people were this interested about matters that were actually important the world would be a much different place for sure.

People complain because they don't like the path videogames is taking, and in a world where the only voice is that of money, some people can't seem to shut up.

A strange game. The only winning move is not to pay.

  4. If people keep buying it I doubt they will change it. They are in business of making money. Really how much could they change a game designed for 6 year old consoles anyways. I for one think the game is boring and old. Old in the sense that it seems to be the same game it was 4-5 years ago. Really though its up to other gaming companies to step up and make a unique game that blows mow4 out of the water.

@Guest thats good news maybe I will buy a multiplayer fps for pc now that they may institute a decent anti hack system.

  5. It is my money, I enjoy the game, screw off and get a life people.

  6. I can name at least 10 games that got better reviews than both BF3 and MW3....nuff said.

  7. Even if it doesn't change dramatically, if you have a winning recipe, why change it? Sure you have your hard core players that hate the often cluster **** environment, for those people, go back to CS. Or the Battlefield fan boys, for them, go enjoy your game. But don't hate on all the people that still enjoy the game, if anything, they are paying a $60 a year subscription to be a part of the player base, they pay it because if they don't they will have nobody to play against. Considering that works out to like $5 a month, plus maybe a bit extra for those map packs, with the amount of time they can spend playing it, its still a good deal for them. And that is why CoD is so successful, and won't be going anywhere any time soon.

  8. If people keeps buying garbage; they will keep releasing garbage with no innovation just like what they doing right now; milking the old graphic engine for the last 4 years or so where is the innovation in that and haven't you heard new MW coming next year expect more carbon copy of what already been released so many years ago.

  9. Apparently they are giving them what they want. I don't know how else you parse the repeated broken sales records ie Black ops,MW2, MW3 etc

  10. COD is bad. KK nuffsaid ujellybro?
