Weekend Open Forum: What's on your Taskbar (or Dock)?

By

On October 19, 2012, 6:30 PM

The Windows Taskbar and OS X’s Dock have gone through a few changes over the years. But despite their evolution, at the core they are still all about being able to quickly launch your favorite or most frequently used applications and easily switch between open windows. With that in mind today we want to ask you: what programs do you keep pinned to your taskbar (or dock for Mac users) and why?

Feel free to include a screenshot with your comment (you'll need to switch to forum mode). Mine is posted above (OS X’s Dock) and includes Reeder to check my RSS feeds, Safari and Chrome for browsing, Transmit to upload files to the server, Pixelmator for some light graphics editing, HipChat for our internal communication at TechSpot, Things to keep track of to-do’s, and Apple’s Activity Monitor and Mail.

  1. Google chrome...thats it. no desktop icons. I like a clean desktop

    Nothing on the taskbar, then?

Do you consider placing icons on taskbar, placing them on desktop? I see the taskbar as an application that runs on desktop, not part of desktop. The taskbar can be hidden or moved to anyone of the four sides of desktop.

  3. Waterfox, MediaMonkey, Microsoft Word, Steam, Diablo 3, VLC Media Player, Daemon Tools

nope only google chrome on the taskbar. I just go through the start menu to launch everything else. I tried the rocket dock app for a while which I really enjoyed but it started getting buggy so I got rid of it.

yes the desktop and taskbar are different. it is very counter productive but I just like the cleaner look. you would then think that hiding the taskbar would appeal to me but honestly that drives me crazy

  6. My taskbar is empty except for the Start button and a few icons in the notifications area. I just keep my frequently used stuff on the desktop.

  7. Old image, but my desktop has been like this since the beginning of the year, I made/modified a few widgets.

Doesn't look bad, might update or something when I have time.

    what docking app is that?

  8. I just use the standard Windows XP Quick Launch toolbar.

It has(at work): Show Desktop, a Shortcut to our file server, FireFox, Chrome, IE, FileZilla, Thunderbird, Illustrator, Photoshop, Indesign, a stop watch app, and iTunes.

Yeah and I can picture not having a Start Button drive me just as crazy.
