Amazon is interested in building a virtual reality video platform. The e-commerce giant is seeking a senior software development manager to help build the virtual reality experience within Amazon Video according to a recent Glassdoor job listing spotted by UploadVR.

In the listing, Amazon says its virtual reality team will explore and create a platform for immersive storytelling which will include an ingestion and playback platform for VR experiences.

Let's digest that for a moment. Streaming rivals like Hulu and Netflix are also pushing VR content but in a completely different way. Netflix's VR app allows you to don a VR headset and watch flatscreen content on a virtual screen in a virtual room (Hulu's app, which has been delayed until spring, appears as though it'll offer similar functionality).

Amazon's effort, on the other hand, sounds as though it'll be a destination to take in 360-degree VR content meaning it could compete directly with the likes of YouTube and Wevr (pronounced "weaver"). What isn't clear is whether Amazon will also fund the creation of some of the 360-degree content or simply serve as a distribution platform.

Those interested in the Amazon VR job will need to bring their "A" game as the list of basic qualifications alone calls for many years of industry experience. More details on the position can be found over on Glassdoor.
