Benchmarks: SiSoftware Sandra

We used SiSoftware Sandra 2009 to test the buffered read and write performance of the DS-409+. The device produced a write result of 64MB/s and read result of 57MB/s. The single bay DS-109 was faster in this test, which was most unexpected.

The Intel Core 2 Duo E7400 test system delivered a similar read result when using either a single drive or a pair working in RAID0. The read performance on the other hand was much faster. An obviously advantage to having a faster processor and more memory.

The random read/write results are very different to the buffered results that we just looked at. The DS-109 delivered similar read performance to that of the DS-409+ though it was much slower when measuring random write performance.

The DS-409+ delivered superior write performance to that of the Core 2 Duo E7400 test system, while its read performance was slower.

Before moving on we ran the SiSoftware Sandra 2009 network performance test on each configuration. As you can see, the Synology NAS devices were reported to be limited to around 55MB/s in this test, while the test system produced around 20% more bandwidth reaching 66MB/s.
