71% of students own or would prefer a Mac, claims survey

Why does Apple related stories (almost) always garner the most comments on this site?
Why the hostility? If Apple makes crap, why are other tech companies and enthusiasts always looking at what they're doing and trying to emulate their success?
Let people buy what they want, that's called freedom of choice.

People posting at TechSpot are gamers and/or at least moderately interested in the tech side of computers. Neither of these categories overlap well with most Mac users.

Mac users want a good computer and a good looking computer and that's what Apple delivers. Let's be honest, most PCs look like ****, and the ones that don't look a lot like Macs. Note that I haven't said anything about cost and I said Macs are good, not great. Macs are wayyy BFing overpriced but those people mentioned above seem happy enough to carry around a 3lb thin machine as opposed to a 4lb fugly machine.
How about a 2.43 lb machine that is pretty good looking - IMO?

I'm very surprised at the comments in this article, you guys are way off base in thinking that this can't be true. I'm a PC guy myself and I'm sure a lot of you are too, but the data doesn't lie.

I work in an academic setting, and let me tell you, it is true. At least 70% of students do want Macs. And that's being conservative. Look in any lecture hall - the Apples are absolutely everywhere. I've seen students come in with Windows machines, notice the sea of Apples, and by the next week they've traded in their Windows machine for whatever Apple machine they can afford.

Yes, the study was sponsored by Apple and I know that seems suspicious, but facts are facts. Look at the real world data, it's true. Students want Macs. They don't know why, they just think they need a Mac for college. Apple's marketing has worked. It's dumb, I hate it, but it's true.

Missing option as to why college students might want a mac: The cool people at the coffee shops I go to all have them. I want to be cool too.

Also, for those K-12 schools that are using Macs, most of them have started complaining that they're not getting any good deals anymore. Probably the reason for a big push to Chromebooks in K-12.

It's like Lord Snoke says.

Light Rises...The Dark Rises to meet it.

Apple products are good and nearly perfect.

They invite anger - which leads to hate - which leads to the dark side.

Right, and I just conducted a one person study that evanescence is in fact the best band in the word. According to you, can't argue with facts. Fact is, who they asked and the methodology is the most important part. Are their questions inviting bias? Are they giving participants bias by revealing certain details? Is it a blind study or a double blind study? Given the company in question did have a vested interest, if it wasn't a double blind then the methodology is tainted and the results worthless. You can make a survey like this say anything you want by manipulating those variables.

So no, data collected incorrectly is garbage and most certainly not fact.

Last I checked the Jedi didn't avoid hundreds of billions in taxes nor was their leader known for being as insufferable as Steve Jobs was. I also don't believe the Jedi would have made their lightsabers in factories with work conditions so bad they need a suicide net.

Apple makes nice looking products that work well. They most certainly aren't the good guys though. There are no good guys. Microsoft, Apple, Google, Facebook, they are all out only for themselves.

The only thing that leads to the dark side is believing a company like Apple are the good guys.

"The results come from a survey carried out on behalf of the organization"

In my humble opinion, most surveys that are paid for / financed by company X, will show results that will DEFINITELY please company X.

Whether Apple computers are better, or those kids are well informed is totally irrelevant as a consequence.

It's not clear that these results necessarily please Jamf but I suppose you could twist it that way if you wanted. Students generally own their computers and would reply with a hearty "Hell No!" if you offered to add them to a restrictive managed device environment.

Not to mention that many such restrictive managed device environments would never allow a personal device to join.

Actually, in three Star Wars: The Clone Wars episodes, it is revealed that the Jedi, actually padawans at that point, construct their own lightsabers after having found the necessary crystals https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2493136/?ref_=ttep_ep6 https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2493138/?ref_=ttep_ep7 https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2493140/?ref_=ttep_ep8 crApple gave up on that kind of thing a long time ago. Why make something yourself when you can have virtual slaves scrambling to do it for almost nothing?

As I see it, you are spot on in saying there are no good guys - especially so among the crop of companies cited. I wonder how much of the world's "wealth" is squandered away in their corporate coffers. I think it is amazing just how much value they place in monetary fiat.

I'm sure the average mac user is sitting in the airport right now with their lightweight mac and totally upset by how much throttling it's doing....:sleeping::sleeping:

Where is the rolls eyes symbol?

I am talking about those who think they need the power? If you're average, you won't be getting the expensive MAC anyway, unless you are in which case you're an *****.

delivers. Let's be honest, most PCs look like ****, and the ones that don't look a lot like Macs.

This was the case 10 years ago, not anymore. The likes of Razer, Microsoft, XPS series, Huewei, Asus, HP and more all have great looking lineups.

Infact Surface Book 2 is probably the best bet that looks even better than Macbooks. Shame about its GPU/storage options tho.

71% of students own or would prefer a Mac, claims survey
And 80% of students are just dumb enough to believe that a diploma is not going to be in debt for the rest of their lives and won't have to work at McD's. LOLOLOL!

Macs are the thinnest, lightest, most well built and most powerful laptops on the market. - despite that keyboard issue - and that's why the free market continues to choose them over the competition.

They don't need the highest end Intel CPU or GPU simply because they run more efficiently.

My Alienware 17" and 15" both weight far more than the equivalent Mac does.

Um, no. You can easily find videos online showing those CPU's throttling almost instantly when stressed.

Yeah, because it was done by Apple and they can skew results. Because in my opinion it highly depends on which students you ask. I have feeling if you go more towards arts degree, you will find more Mac fans, and if you go more towards technical degree, you will find more PC fans.

Now, to be fair, even overpriced, Mac does some things right, sync features are great, Mac OS simply works and is in general use pretty good, once you get used to it. Support is also good, as long as you don't break it, which sends repair costs over the roof. And overall looks, weight and battery life do well for proper portable machine. Plus in some cases, you also have some pretty great Mac only software for video editing and image editing on it, if I remember correctly. Now before PC fans pick up pitchforks and torches, yes there is a lot more PC can do for you. From upgradability, cheaper price, more programs, better versitality, more choices, better hardware,... We aren't talking enthusiasts here, there are a lot of people who want simple choice, simple device, that just works. And if you need max portability, you need something to take notes, do presentations and term papers on, play videos and music on, browse web,... Mac will do all that just fine and beside that, for average Joe, having brand as status symbol is plus.

That being said, it still is very overpriced device for that and regular laptop can do that just fine too. It just takes more work in terms of research to find what is for you. Which average Joe isn't always willing to do. And beside that we are talking about people equivalent of "gamers" who are called that because they play Facebook games like Farmville or Candy Crush or whatever is popular now. Which again depends on where you put your polls.

I’d rather have a MacBook than a windows machine because I prefer the OS and they offer the most colour accurate screens, especially for the money. For photographers they are second to none. The quality of Apple devices is outstanding, I don’t understand how people can say they are badly made. I’d you love tech then you’ll love a Apple product.

But can totally understand why people might not want a Mac. Especially if you plan to game. Or if you want to get most processing power per dollar. I have a windows gaming desktop at home and a MacBook Air, perfect combination allowing me to game at home and edit photos on my trips away.

There just seems to be a lot of people with an irrational hatred for Apple. I don’t really understand why, maybe it’s the high prices?
