In 35 years of playing games, I've never quite had a wow moment quite like the first time I powered up a voodoo 2. It was an important time for PC gaming.
The API fragmentation was a headache though. Glide was really a subset of the OpenGL standard, and that fragmentation didn't help OpenGl. It's a real shame that Direct 3D, a proprietary API pulled ahead for years.
