App outage leaves Tesla owners stranded, unable to start their vehicles

And it's why I still drive a STANDARD (manual) transmission. Besides the fact I ENJOY
a manual transmission, it's kind of a "new" retro anti-theft device. I've seen a few stories
where would be car thieves were stopped, because they couldn't drive "a stick".
and then suddenly you woke up...
idk how it is at your place but in europe if someone targets your car to be stolen it will be stolen with or without electronics or transmission.
anyway relying on a phone for a car operation or anything else is just a question of time ventually you will break or lose your phone one day which will bring you to the same inconvenience as this outage case. really not worth to be a techspot article

It's technology, unexpected things happen occasionally. As the article stated, you have other options. Key card, Fob, and for those who do not wish to carry either you can setup the Bluetooth connection as an option as well.

Elon's reply was basically an (Oop's our bad) response. How often is it that a company will publicly except ownership of a problem they introduced themselves? I say Props for admitting it and fixing the problem in a timely fashion.

this society-wide communist totalitarian experiment that is the experimental vaccines and don't wanna get the covid pass? Well, maybe you'll find, that the government has decided to remote deactivate your car one day. You know, to protect everyone from YOU, you dangerous dissident, you...

Tesla should offer an option to prevent this type of problem.

Besides carrying the vehicle's key card/key fob, Tesla owners can plan ahead for this type of app unavailability by taking steps to ensure their phone can still be used as a key via the car's Bluetooth connection.

Wait... the vehicle's key card/key 🗝

I read it's possible to carry something called a key fob in your pocket to drive your motion device. Advanced, but then if anyone is going to have it, it would be Tesla.

Tesla owners may also carry the vehicle's key card or key fob to ensure they can access the vehicle at any time, regardless of app status.
Gracefully glossed over and very irresponsibly mentioned in passing as quickly as possible, but imagine the possibilities!

Imagine if your vehicles had a small device, or maybe even a card, of some kind. One that could get you in and maybe, just maybe, get your car going.
Or maybe even a cut, patterned piece of metal that can be used, something like a key, to do all the things your vehicle can do.

I mean an app is better than a small piece of metal that if you lose will cost you money to get a locksmith or a car dealership to replace. And on top of this they are annoying to carry. I mostly now don’t carry a wallet or cash because my phone and watch can pay for things from my banks. If I could ditch my keys for an app I’d happily do it. I’d take an app outage over losing a key and it costing me hundreds to replace. (And yes I know Teslas don’t have keys, they have keycards - which are easier to keep than keys in all fairness).

Eventually we will have chips embedded into ourselves Cyberpunk 2077 style for everything but in the meantime a small rectangle of glass in my pocket will do.

To those saying they won’t operate or use anything connected. Good luck, you’re going to find that extremely difficult as time goes on.

This just shows that we are trading common sense for convenience. It is convenient to have everything on your phone, but that's having a lot of eggs in 1 basket. Also with self driving cars becoming more popular, the risk of someone committing murder without having to do it physically is growing. Just send some malware or hack your car, and send you off the bridge at top speed. How convenient indeed!

It sounds like you all love Teslas, electric cars, and pretty much everything that is new in technology without questioning whether it is actually good, bad, or indifferent. I'm guessing not one of you would dream of leaving the house without a phone in your pocket. I'd bet you even take one with you when going to the toilet. Are they waterproof? You will be showering with them I suspect.

 It would be Tesla?? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
My 2006 Prius had it a full three years before Musky and Tesla released this crap.

Like all the problems with Autopilot?

This is utter bs. You are literally a tech news website yet have no idea how tech works. Do you even attempt to check your information before spreading fake news? Not a single person was locked out of their cars. It was a network error, bluetooth still worked.
Actually, the article does not say that. In fact, it points out the other options available.

One day, millions of EVs will be on the road, some hacker will turn off the electricity & millions of people will be stranded.

One day, the govt. will not want anyone going anywhere and turn off the electricity.
In China, or North Korea, or perhaps Iran or Afghanistan. In the US, such an action would likely bring lots of 2nd Amendment owners out and foment rebellion.
