idk how it is at your place but in europe if someone targets your car to be stolen it will be stolen with or without electronics or transmission.
anyway relying on a phone for a car operation or anything else is just a question of time ventually you will break or lose your phone one day which will bring you to the same inconvenience as this outage case. really not worth to be a techspot article

It's technology, unexpected things happen occasionally. As the article stated, you have other options. Key card, Fob, and for those who do not wish to carry either you can setup the Bluetooth connection as an option as well.

Tesla should offer an option to prevent this type of problem.

Besides carrying the vehicle's key card/key fob, Tesla owners can plan ahead for this type of app unavailability by taking steps to ensure their phone can still be used as a key via the car's Bluetooth connection.

Gracefully glossed over and very irresponsibly mentioned in passing as quickly as possible, but imagine the possibilities!

Imagine if your vehicles had a small device, or maybe even a card, of some kind. One that could get you in and maybe, just maybe, get your car going.
Or maybe even a cut, patterned piece of metal that can be used, something like a key, to do all the things your vehicle can do.

I mean an app is better than a small piece of metal that if you lose will cost you money to get a locksmith or a car dealership to replace. And on top of this they are annoying to carry. I mostly now don’t carry a wallet or cash because my phone and watch can pay for things from my banks. If I could ditch my keys for an app I’d happily do it. I’d take an app outage over losing a key and it costing me hundreds to replace. (And yes I know Teslas don’t have keys, they have keycards - which are easier to keep than keys in all fairness).

Eventually we will have chips embedded into ourselves Cyberpunk 2077 style for everything but in the meantime a small rectangle of glass in my pocket will do.

This just shows that we are trading common sense for convenience. It is convenient to have everything on your phone, but that's having a lot of eggs in 1 basket. Also with self driving cars becoming more popular, the risk of someone committing murder without having to do it physically is growing. Just send some malware or hack your car, and send you off the bridge at top speed. How convenient indeed!

In China, or North Korea, or perhaps Iran or Afghanistan. In the US, such an action would likely bring lots of 2nd Amendment owners out and foment rebellion.
