Apple has updated their MacBook and iMac product lines today, refreshing the 15-inch MacBook Pro with improved hardware and Force Touch, while also introducing a cheaper variant of the 5K "Retina" iMac.
While the new 15-inch MacBook Pro's design hasn't changed, Apple has integrated their new pressure-sensitive Force Touch trackpad that the company first used on the 12-inch MacBook. The trackpad uses Apple's Taptic Engine to provide realistic haptic feedback, and it supports a new range of gestures as well.
Apple has also given the laptop some under-the-hood upgrades. The 15-inch MacBook Pro now uses ultra-fast flash storage that's "up to 2.5 times faster" than the previous generation, with bandwidth of 2 GB/s. Apple has swapped out the Nvidia GeForce GT 750M GPU too, replacing it with an AMD Radeon R9 M370X that is "up to 80 percent faster".
The 15-inch MacBook Pro's battery life will now last an hour longer, according to Apple, thanks to the inclusion of a slightly-larger 99.5 Wh battery. Meanwhile, the company has stuck with the same Intel Haswell CPUs as the previous model. Prices for the laptop stay the same, at $1999 for the entry-level model, and $2499 for the model with now-AMD discrete graphics.
As for the iMac with Retina display, Apple has introduced a new model that costs just $1,999. You still get the beautiful 5K display, but Apple has removed the Fusion Drive in favor of a standard 1 TB hard drive, while also reducing the speed of the CPU from 3.5 GHz to 3.3 GHz. The Radeon R9 M290X GPU has been swapped out for a more modest R9 M290 as well.
The previous entry-level Retina model has also received a price cut, coming down from $2,499 to $2,299. This makes the Retina iMac even better value for money, considering a standalone 5K monitor will set you back over $2,000.
