Bungie denies claims that legitimate third-party apps are behind Destiny 2 bans on PC

PC owners have had to wait over a month longer than their console cousins for Destiny 2 to arrive on the platform, but the multiplayer shooter finally launched a few days ago. And while many appear to be enjoying the game, there have been numerous reports of people being banned for no reason.

It’s suspected that the bans are related to Bungie’s rules forbidding the use of any third-party software that inserts code into the game client, something the studio claims maintains the security of the PC version and prevents players from hacking or cheating the game.

The restriction means features in many popular third-party applications used for game capture, livestreaming, and performance monitoring don't work. Affected programs include MSI Afterburner, EVGA Precision, Fraps, OBS, and XSplit. Even the overlay features in voice communication services like Discord and Mumble aren’t compatible with Destiny 2.

Not long after the game launched, forums and subreddits started filling up with Destiny 2 PC players who said they’d been banned but couldn’t understand why. Many started assuming they had been automatically banned for using the innocuous programs, but Bungie has released a statement assuring players this isn’t the case.

The studio said Destiny 2 could not automatically ban anyone; this will only occur after a manual investigation. Importantly, Bungie said it has not and will not ban people for the use of overlays or performance tools, including Discord, Xsplit, OBS, RTSS, etc. While it admits to banning 400 players, it says a group of them were banned in error, and those decisions, which weren't related to third-party overlays, have been overturned.

“Bans were applied to players who were using tools that pose a threat to the shared ecosystem of the game,” said Bungie, which likely covers the use of cheats such as aimbots.

Despite Bungie’s assurances, many say they were banned from Destiny 2 as soon as they booted it up, while others claim to have had nothing but the Blizzard app and the game running at the time.

It wouldn't be Destiny without a few major blunders out of the gate.

Save yourself the time and money and skip Destiny 2. Bungie has failed yet again.

Edit: I'm not here trying to troll. I put 43 hours into Destiny 2 having never played the original and I thought it was garbage. There was no challenge in completing the campaign and there's little end game content. In the end I'm glad destiny 2 was gifted to me through a group of buddies. Had it not been for them I likely never would of finished the campaign.

Believe it or not, they've actually improved from Destiny 1.

...

Until they didn't.

Read about this on Reddit the other day. Seems pretty widespread, I find it hard to believe that so many people are lying in tandem, so hopefully, Bungie finds a way to resolve the situation.

Thought of buying it for PC but luckily I waited. Don't know what to believe and until they can somehow prove they don't ban people for nothing I can't believe them but it's impossible to prove so I guess I will never buy this one. Shame, I was really waiting for this but not taking a risk as it costs 100€ (roughly 117$) to find out if it works or not.

If you plan on playing dlc when it releases or just close to the time it releases you can expect to double that cost. At least. I'm basing that off the costs of Destiny 1.

I'll be waiting for 3 years and buy the game + all DLC for the non-overpriced usual cost of a game.

Bungie denied having ever initially banned someone for 3rd party app usage then went to say it was an accident and the innocent have been unbanned? and there is no auto-ban according to Bungie.

Biggest point here is that the innocent have been unbanned. Bungie's mistakes have been corrected and SOMEWHAT admitted to. The innocent should really get a sweet LE gun for being the first 500 banned.

What a nice way to threat PC gamers... You already have to wait one month, them get bans because of commonly used apps... F*** you Bungie.
