I haven't bought a new video card yet, but I was thinking of getting a 6850 or a 6870.

Could I max out skyrim at 1680x1050 with one of the above video cards and the following system components?

Intel i5-750 2.66 GHz
Windows 7
8 GB DDR3 1333 Ram
1 TB Hard Drive

Thanks in advance!

Bethesda blogs system requirements.

•Windows 7/Vista/XP PC (32 or 64 bit)
•Processor: Quad-core Intel or AMD CPU
•4GB System RAM
•6GB free HDD space
•DirectX 9.0c compatible NVIDIA or AMD ATI video card with 1GB of RAM (Nvidia GeForce GTX 260 or higher (i.e GTX550Ti); ATI Radeon 4890 or higher).
•DirectX compatible sound card
•Internet access for Steam activation

You will probably be fine on high settings.

You will likely be looking at a High/Ultra mix depending on what type of in-game performance is enough for you. At least that's been my experience so far with the 6850 on pretty much all games currently out. I can let you know how well my 6850 is doing once I get Skyrim, but not sure if you plan on buying it day one. Either should work well and it all depends on how much you're willing to spend.
