cant connect to the internet

hi all. having just got a new dell inspiron 6400, i followed the vista wizard to connect to my wireless internet connection. it shows that i am now connected to my network, but not the internet. the wee pictures show a green line from my laptop to my network, ive seen it say connected, whereas the picture of my laptop to the internet has a red line, and says not connected. any ideas?

access is given as 'local only' is that correct? i cant see how i change it

use run->cmd /k ipconfig /all

likely you will see an ip address like 169.x.x.x and this will get you NOWHERE.

try My Network Places->View Network Connections and then you should be
able to right-click to View Available Networks

you should then be able to attempt a connection, assuming you've left the
WPA/WEP encryption OFF.

Once you can connect, you can then proceed to:
1) change the SSID
2) enable encryption
