Computer will not shut down

when I click on the Start button abd click shutdown, my screen says it is saving personal settings, but when it says computer is shutting down...that message sits there forever and my computer never actually turn off.

I am running Windows XP professional with service pack 3
I have a Toshiba Satellite A65

Any suggestions??
