Counter Strike lockups

My computer keeps locking up when I am playing Counter Strike (not Source) and I know my computer is overly capable of playing it... It will freeze the screen and loop the last second or two of sound. Sometimes it lets me ctrl + alt + del and end the task or close it, but other times I have to manually reboot my computer... Does anyone have any ideas as to why this would be happening?

Well first of all, did you try uninstalling the game?
- Second, did this problem occur after an update, and were you EVER able to play the game without this problem occuring? - - It could be a compatibility issue.
