Donald Trump tells Apple to "get rid" of diversity programs after shareholders back them

A hot potato: Big tech companies have been quick to put an end to or cut back their diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs, a response to pressure from Donald Trump and his administration. Pushing back against the trend is Apple, whose shareholders voted down a proposal to dismantle its DEI initiatives this week. However, Trump has now personally urged the company to end these diversity policies.

Meta and Google are just two of the tech firms to end their diversity hiring goals and scrap DEI programs in the wake of Trump's inauguration. The president has called these initiatives discriminatory against those whose race or gender does not align with those the programs are designed to help. There has even been the threat of legal action for not following the administration's wishes – Trump suggested the DoJ could investigate if the programs violate any laws.

Apple, which has long championed DEI initiatives, has been keeping relatively quiet.

Conservative think tank The National Center for Public Policy Research had submitted a proposal titled Request to Cease DEI Efforts to Apple's shareholder meeting this week. It was defeated by 210.45 million votes in favor and 8.84 billion votes against.

The group submitted a similar proposal to Costco's annual meeting last month, where it was also rejected.

Apple CEO Tim Cook did admit that the company might have to make some changes to its diversity programs as the legal landscape changes, though he told shareholders that "We will continue to create a culture of belonging."

Earlier today, Trump urged Apple to get rid of its DEI programs, rather than "just make adjustments" to them. "DEI was a hoax that has been very bad for our country. DEI is gone," Trump said in a post on Truth Social.

Last week, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier filed a federal lawsuit against Target, alleging that its DEI initiatives misled investors and resulted in significant financial losses. The lawsuit claims that Target violated the Securities Exchange Act by failing to disclose the potential risks associated with its DEI and Pride Month campaigns, which led to consumer backlash and a decline in stock value.

Cook has striven to form a closer relationship with Trump during the president's second term in office. Yesterday, Apple announced that the company would make a $500 billion investment in US manufacturing over the next four years, which includes building a new factory in Houston and hiring over 20,000 people in the US. Trump commended Apple for the announcement, saying the reason behind it was "faith in what we are doing."

DEI is just the N word to them.
As a person of color, I hate DEI because it takes away from all the actual hard work I put in to get where I am and the real accomplishments I have. I am not a DEI hire, but people think I am one because of how many there are.

DEI is bad for everyone, people need to stop protecting it because Trump says it's bad.

You can disagree with people you like and you can agree with people you dislike, the world needs to relearn this

How is diversity, equally, and inclusion bad?

It's just what you people say instead of saying the n-word, since that would get you in trouble.

As a person of color, lol please. Just like all those republican Twitter accounts "as a gay black man... I support Trump and hate DEI" kind of thing.

I guarantee there is not a single thing you can say about diversity, equality, and inclusion that is both real and had a tangiblly negative effect on anything.

If they're looking down on you and using DEI as the excuse,
they'll still look down on you and justify it with another excuse without DEI.

It's bad to solely rely on those aspect alone to hire someone to do the work and not based on their merit.

DEI is racist and sexist all rolled into one. Anything that excludes someone based on their skin color is racist. Same as anything that excludes someone based on their sex is sexist.
Yea that would be bad if any company had ever done that, but you know as well as I do that is not reality.

Only a crazy person can hear "diversity, equality, and inclusion" and think it's about racism and sexism. That's how powerful Maga brainwashing is. With zero real world evidence you're willing to take a phrase and apply a fully opposite definition to it that just happens to fit exactly with republicans latest scapegoat tactic.

It discredits my real accomplishments as just "dei" practices. You're so busy defending DEI that you're ignoring a real concern that hardworking people of color have.

Maybe of I stop talking like I'm white it'll make more sense.

This lazy n***** comes in and doesn't do a damn thing, but they had to meet a DEI quota. We'll he gets fired, but I didn't. Did I get hired because of DEI and I just barely did enough to keep the job? Or, did I just work harder than that lazy mofo and build some real success for my self? So instead of people looking at me like a hardworking black man, I'm just some DEI hire that did the bare minimum to keep his job. Those decades of working harder than the white people in my industry are worthless. Having to work twice as Har as a white guy to get the same job? That accomolishment is taken away from me. 4 years into DEI and I have lost most of credibility that I built up over the previous 20 years.

The stupid white people **** of "everything is racist" completely wiped clean 2 decades of being that hard working black guy. 20 years of hard work gone in 4 just because a bunch of white people wanted to decided what was racist for us. Stop telling us what we need to be offended by. Seriously, **** off. We're perfectly capable of deciding what is and is not racist for ourselves and we don't need a bunch of bleeding heart white people telling us how and why we are oppressed.

In regard to The Patriot Act... that's like asking "How is patriotism bad?"

BTW... the "E" doesn't stand for equality (I assume you meant that when you wrote "equally"). It stands for equity. These are very different concepts. If DEI actually protected equality, I'd be all for it.

I don't respect or respond to this level of ignorance. You are a racist and you are an *****.

Don't quote me anymore.

Here comes the insults from the left! "Maga brainwashing" - says the person that is now starting to come off as racist and sexist because I won't bow down to their way of thinking. Good on you. You can keep those thoughts to yourself and keep telling yourself that you're not part of the problem.

I haven't said a single racist or sexist thing. Typical Maga, can't stick to reality for even a short time

I'm sorry you don't like being talked to the way I have been for the last almost 40 years. Ignoring the problem doesn't make it disappear and I guess you can't handle being told by an actual person of color that you're doing more harm than good while parading under a banner of equality.

Not a single one of you magas can provide real evidence that DEI has ever been a bad thing, unless it's purely due to political backlash. I'd love it if you could because then we would have something real to talk about instead of this scapegoat racism masked as some kind of pro business movement.

Because it is discriminating against those who are qualified via skills vs those who are potentially less skilled but fit the quota race, sex, etc etc. It's sounds good for marketing but in reality it does the opposite of what it is intended to do.

I donr like taking to people who are wrong and have stupid opinions based on false information, to such an obviously disingenuous degree that it's more comical than anything else. I could not care less about the color of your skin.

I guess being black makes me wrong and my opinions stupid? Because I'm writing this from the perspective of a black male

So now, someone who's been saying "government telling business what to do is bad, very bad" is telling a corporation what to do.
How very ironic!

Now that the evil of DEI is out, I'm fully expecting all the prices to go down significantly and inflation to be completely under control. I'm expecting a booming economy fair to all the good hard working people!
Yea, right.
