I have moved your thread to our Security and the Web forum.

Your system is infected with malware.

Very Important: Before deciding whether you should clean or reformat your system, go and read this thread HERE and decide what it is you want to do.

If after reading the above, you wish to clean your system, do the following.

Go and read the Viruses/Spyware/Malware, preliminary removal instructions. Follow all the instructions exactly.

Post fresh HJT, AVG Antispyware and Combofix logs as attachments into this thread, only after doing the above.

Also, let me know the results of the AVG Antirootkit scan.

Regards Howard :)

I have decided to reinstall and format. I have never done this before. I have the recovery CD. Please could you provide me some tips on what I need to do.

yes ... Just enter bios by pressing delete when your computer starts..

Once in Bios go to boot and selcect your first boot device as the cd rom save changes and restart.

Then put your xp Disk in and your computer will then run the xp disk all you need do is follow the instuctions . Make sure you have your 25 digit product key!

You need to do the following.

Diconnect from the net and don`t reconnect, until you have your firewall software installed.

1 Restart your computer and go to setup usually by pressing the F2 or delete key.

2 Once you get into setup look for the boot menu and make sure you set it to boot from cd first followed by your hard drive.

3 Put the Windows xp disk into your cd drive.

4 Now save your settings and exit setup.

5 While your computer is booting you will see a message that says "press any key to boot from cd" press any key.

6 When the welcome to setup screen appears press enter and then press F8 to accept the Microsoft licence agreement.

7 You will be prompted to repair an installation press the escape key.

8 Now select the partition that you want to reformat and press the D key to delete it you will be asked to confirm that you want to delete the partition.

9 Now press C to create a brand new partition you will be asked what size you want the partition to be in mega bytes. If you just press enter then the partition will be the maximum size that you can have. This is perfectly ok if you don`t want to create multiple partitions.

10 You will now be asked to format the partition select the ntfs file sytem and do a full format.

11 Once the format is complete setup will continue.

Your computer will restart during the remaining setup again you will be asked to press any key to boot from cd DO NOT PRESS ANYTHING and setup will continue. Once the setup is complete and you are back in Windows remove the Windows cd from your cd drive.

Install your firewall software and reconnect to the net. Install whatever drivers you need, then run Windows updates.

Finally, install whatever programmes/software you want.

Hey I am having a problem.

When it comes to deleting the partition, when I press 'd' windows says it cannot perform the operation because it contains temporary set up files.
so i cant delete the partition.

help

Try doing a windows disk defragmenter on the drive you want to delete. Once done try to delete the partion again.

Regards Jase

Well, when it comes to the partition, there are two.

E drive: which is inactive (mesh say i can delete this as it contains the recovery wizard which is not needed if you are using the disk)

C: drive: ( i am trying to delete this)

do you think the c drive will delete by deleting the e drive?

feedback appreciated

no. i recommend logging on then going to control panel/performance and maintenance/admin tools/computer management and then go down to disk defragmenter and then select the c drive and analyse it. It will then tell you if it needs defragmenting if so just press the defrag button.

Then try deleting that partion.

I recommend getting this McAfee siteAdvisor. Must have Mozilla Firefox.

Also try resetting the bios, (usually there is a jumper on the motherboard that you switch) , or you can take the cmos battery out for 20 mins. For some reason, sometimes the CMOS setup gets confused and wont load, so you have to reset it.

Also during the process, are you hitting the ESC key when it asks if you want to install a fresh copy or reinstall over the other? It sounds like you're choosing to reinstall which won't let you delete the partition.

Regards Jase

I have gone to disk defrag and the hard drive is clean. there is no need to defragment it.

when i am in the install i press ESC to install a frsh copy of windows.

mesh have told me to delete the E drive and this should let me delete the C drive. but i;m confused .

help.

my removable disks are usually known as the E drive. i am now suspecting could the pc be saying the E drive is your removable disk drive???
