Google searches for "free VPN" skyrocket in Florida after porn ban goes live

Cutting corners: Floridians are turning to VPNs to bypass blocks brought about by the state's new age verification requirements for accessing online porn. Data from Google Trends shows that searches for "free VPN" have skyrocketed in Florida over the past few days.

The law officially went into effect on January 1, making Florida one of 17 states – mostly in the South – enforcing such regulations. However, many adult sites are either blocking access in the state altogether or simply ignoring the law. In response, users are turning to VPNs to bypass the restrictions while also masking their real IP addresses and locations.

The trends don't lie. As reported by Newsweek, VPN queries hit the roof right as the new year rolled in, scoring a perfect 100 on Google's scale on January 2. This was a big jump over the 37 score on December 30. Floridians were also firing off searches for specific VPN brands as well as "internet pornography" and the puzzling "computer virus" during that window.

Currently, when Floridians attempt to visit Pornhub, they are no longer greeted with the usual adult content. Instead, they see a PSA from adult star Cherie DeVille explaining the situation.

"As you may know, your elected officials in Florida are requiring us to verify your age before allowing you access to our website. While safety and compliance are at the forefront of our mission, giving your ID card every time you want to visit an adult platform is not the most effective solution for protecting our users, and in fact, will put children and your privacy at risk," she says.

Unsurprisingly, Pornhub reports that its traffic from Florida has already plunged by 80% since the law took effect. However, there's a good chance that many users are simply switching to VPNs or turning to other platforms.

For now, Pornhub has voluntarily blocked itself across nearly all states with these age verification laws. Louisiana is an exception though and the site is still allowing access there through its "LA Wallet" digital ID system.

While the regulation may sound promising in theory, civil liberty groups warn of serious privacy risks, especially considering the role of data brokers. Just last year, a Florida-based firm leaked 2.9 billion records, including names and Social Security numbers, in a massive data breach.

That hasn't stopped Georgia, though, which is set to set to become the 18th state mandating age checks for porn sites starting in July. Child safety advocates are hopeful more states will follow suit.

You can take Porn out of Florida... but you cannot take Floridans out of Porn...!

Which f**king senator stuck their head into my arse. Porn ban, really, so gambling ban, now this. They'll end up banning keyboards - no really. They will probably go onto a banning spree.

They really are asking for it... Rebellions start this way.

Ι feel ppl should carefully study the History of the US esp the part related to the Prohibition.

Prohibition doesn't work. It never did and never will.

The US of A was divided b/c of Prohibition for decades. This came shortly after the Civil War.

Trying to re-introduce Prohibition (Pr0n) now makes you look like a fool.

It was actually 50+ years after the Civil War (1865 was end of war, prohibition started in 1920s - ratified in 1919).

The causes are actually quite similar to today though… wacko religious groups started grassroots complaints about alcohol undermining US society and morals - its main opposition were German Lutheran groups - who after WWI fell out of favour and lost public support.

Watching the same thing happen now - with the left losing “moral authority” thanks to multiple causes - is kind of alarming.

Don’t worry though - much like alcohol in the past, porn cannot be effectively banned, and thus will eventually be merely a side note in US history.

I get the privacy concerns, but I don’t follow PornHub’s it puts your children at risk claim (quote in article). Uhm. How?

Their argument that children would be at greater risk is because of the sites that won't implement ID verification (or block themselves from the state) that will still remain accessible to children. Those sites, since they are ignoring this law, will also tend to not moderate what is on their site (non-consensual porn, illegal/underage/CSAM porn, etc.). Thus, a curious child (either accidentally or on purpose) is more likely to find such content, putting them at greater risk. Whether or not that argument holds, the privacy implication is another aspect.

Free Speech Coalition v. Paxton will be the case that decides the fate of (probably) all of these laws, although that case only involves Texas, it will either set new precedent or re-affirm existing precedent regarding these laws. Oral arguments for the case are scheduled for January 15, 2025.

Glad they are thinking of the children -Probably Matt Gaetz to thank.

from 2021 image Florida's top search was BBC, so like english programs
That women really needs an aubergine

Don't forget books. Florida also banned tons of books that doesn't align with their religious nonsense.
Why spread disinformation like this? California school libraries have banned more books than anyone, and liberal censorship of books -- and other material -- for adults is at an all-time high.

As for Florida, they haven't "banned" books from adults. Sexually explicit material isn't allowed in children's schools.

I agree, but somewhere deep inside, I still respect their attempts. Porn is a powerfull thing. Yes, just like food or alcohol it does not nessesarily destroy a life. But it can.
It can rob a young person of the most beautiful relation and family in life, replaced by a parody on healthy relation. I support parents trying to do something, but I am well aware that effect will be low. It reminds me Twich, a game streaming site which pretty much has a form of erotic shows. Even if Pornhub stopped existing, 10 parasites would pop up in lsightly different forms targeting the same people.

I think the confusion comes from this..:

The state of Florida hasn't banned any books... it's the law allowing Florida SCHOOLS to ban/prohibit books that has/had people up in arms...

The US is such a ludicrous place these days. When they are not getting all faux-puritanical and pretending to have some high morality they are voting for Donald Trump and running around with semi-automatics.
