Dual Monitor Resolution Problems

I recently decided to switch to using 2 monitors just for the pure fun of having 2 instead of one, I had another similar looking monitor sitting around so I decided to hook it up this morning. All successful except for the problem with the resolution on the second monitor, this one is running much lower than my main display monitor. While my main is running in a 1440x900 pixel res. my secondary is running in only 880x600 pixels and when i try to increase the resolution on the second monitor, it goes black and doesn't display correctly. Btw these are wide screen monitors.Please give me a few reasons or solutions for these problems. Ty
