E3 2020 analysis shows significant shift toward female protagonists in games

Just a reminder that Tomb Raider came out in 1996 lol.

You're not supposed to remember that.

All seriousness.. I don't care if it's female or male.. I'm just sick of the **** story, day one DLC, day 1 bugs, and the bugs that never get fixed. Looking at you Horizon: Zero Dawn. It's got a good story and fun game play but that camera is absolute trash and I'm not convinced that they have any intentions on fixing it.

Also King's Quest 4 (first video game featuring a female protagonist) came out in 1988, Streets of Rage in 1991, Jill of the Jungle in 1992...

You might have said that in jest but that's pretty much how it is.

I mean, SJWs love to erase and rewrite history.

No Laura croft is someone they bring up all the time as proof of sexism. Honestly I miss the big boobs and short shorts though

It was only a matter of time before the cultural marxists took over the gaming industry as they have hollywood etc.

What's sad is that putting female protagonists into a game IN NO WAY empowers females in general or changes the fact that it is a male dominated hobby. Nor does it change the fact that mostly men will earn money for being the heads of R&D.

Just slapping a female face on something changes nothing.

Sounds like someone doesn't like the idea of Traps... heh.
I play GW2 and I would say many guys will make a male character, girls a girl character. I make a mixture of all races and alternate between male and female.
Is this not just a difference for difference sake.
You make a game, it needs to stand out, can it be a feminine role? Yes? Talk to marketing? No? Can it be an earthworm called Jim?

I don't think its simply following Hollywood as eforce seems to think, but he may not be wrong with all the reboots. Steal a film, replace with female character. In games, I think you have so many these days its flooded, but same with film.

If I was going to buy GTA6, I would probably reconsider with a female as a lead role. But like someone else mentioned earlier, gender choice and full characterisation should be a choice by now on most games.

It is long overdue for women getting some respect in gaming. Having all male protagonist is showing exclusion. It show they are not caring about us.

I don't think it is respect. I mean look at all the Japanese wallpapers on wallpaper engine, I get it stems from Anime, but female protagonists are always designed with males in mind are they not ? Either they are visually or they will be made so by the fanboys.
And you can make said woman frail, and she will be deemed made by a male who looks down on women, or you will have a strong character, which is so males can relate to her better when kicking butt ingame.

I just see sexism and racism these things that when you highlight the good you are doing about it, you actually bring it all up from year dot, we go through how tough things are for x y and z, and we say there is change on the horizon, to have the same discussion every 10 years, because, nothing changes, and probably because we don't let it die.

Jesus, its really sad that you think that way ignoring numerous female protagonists and most importantly, artistic freedom.

However, lets talk in your language :

Africans are severely under represented in gaming. This is insensitive and racist. There should be more African men and women as protagonists.

Russians are always made villain. Thats soul tearing and racist. We should have many times more Russians as protagonists to present a fair and just view of them.

Germans! Need I elaborate here? It is sickening to see how the people of Germany have been made in to MP 40 wielding killing machines and its an affront to Germans.. nay an affront to whole humanity. We should have more Germans as protagonists to bring justice.

Need I go on?

Here's a crazy suggestion, why not let artists decide whatever they want free from this political BS. If the final product is something that we like then we will buy it and conversely we won't buy it if it doesn't interest us.

What's sad is thinking that women need to be "empowered" by having men (since of course the vast majority of game designers are men) write and design more female characters in video games, a hobby which the vast majority of women have no interest in at all (and especially not in the big main stream AAA titles where these female characters are featured).

Feminist Frequency... run by someone who is not a gamer and who "finds gaming icky" just to push her agender. good job techspot...

Everytime I discover a new "celebrity" like that woman it makes me even more depressed about humanity.

As I've gotten older I find that I disagree with Elon Musk and Stephen Hawking about AI. I don't fear AI taking over, I welcome it. Humanity *needs* replaced. I just hope it does a better job then we have.

Works for me, I like looking at women! :)

As a straight white male I usually prefer to play as a female character and if romances are possible she will be a lesbian character.

The very idea that this not only happens, but is common, must be absolutely infuriating to some of the super Feminists and those obsessed with the idea of representation above all else.

The ability to adjust your player model opens up another hilariously "voluptuous" can of worms as well (just go play the conan survival game on a public server for an excellent example of what I mean).

I don't know what they're talking about. There's been plenty of games over the years, and very popular ones, that have female protagonists and female character development. Social justice activism is an apparent marketing scheme that must have created battles in order to be a justified ideology. Most females don't really care about video games and if even they do play, it's only the extreme feminists who are bothering to ***** about a non-existent issue. Feminists and social justice warriors are created miseries and caricatures of themselves. STFU, nobody cares.

You hit the nail on the head when you said its about conflict. Its all about conflict now. What can we do to stir up the biggest mess. My wife plays games and has never noticed or cared if the main character is male or female. Often men choose to play female characters so half of the female characters you see are actually dudes.

In games and RPGs your supposed to play someone different and strange to your life or worldview. I usually played murderers and chaotic folks with no concern about the future (nothing like myself). If your trying to recreate yourself in a video game, well I guess you could but it just seems odd. I tend to read books and play games as a observer or a director in the case of a game.

Regardless. Bring up sex, race, inequality, justice, and any other words of the day and expect thw gloves to come off. The whole point of such discussions is to divide and enrage those involved.

You can not demand respect, it's either you give it and/or you earn it. Invading then demanding is doubly worse.

Either you come and show respect, or just STFU and GTFO. That's the rule, a very painfully hard rule but it always true because it keep things in place and maintain peace and harmony.

Infact, I would contend that this is the men's social rule. Men are aggresive and have the power to hurt each other really really bad. That's why men have the rule and they learn to respect each other, even toward their worst archnemesis. Men simply do not want battle each other for arbitrary reasons, too dangerous and too exhausting.
