Explorer not starting, task manager erroring...

I've got few problems that just showed up on my comp after i restarted after an xp security patch update.

When i boot up, explorer fails to start (i get the standard "explorer.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close...).

After all the things that are going to load do, i go to the task manager and click "new task" to try and start explorer that way. Task manager gets the same "has encountered and need to close" problem as explorer. This happens everytime. I have to ctrl+alt+del again and close the unresponsive task manger window from the previous ctrl+alt+del.

Obviously i cannot even start any program so i cant go into the control panal and uninstall things. is there anyhting i can do to fix this?

Edit: The same thing happens in safe mode also. And after the task manager fails the first time, the dr. Watson debugger also fails and needs to close.

BTW, i'm getting on firefox by clicking the "click here" when the first error pops up the going to "view policy on the web".

Firefox also crashes when i try to open a file (like go to the c drive and open an exe or got to file > open file) usually without an error report pop up box.

It`s best to reply to posts by making a new post, rather than editing the original post,as things can get a bit confusing.

As for the problem, the only thing I can suggest is try a repair install as HERE.
Try and back up any important personal files if possible. Not that a repair should affect them.

The next poster will suggest a better idea, one hopes :)

Edit:Is System Restore accessible ?

sorry about editing first, i just thought it better for someone to get all the info at once rather than having it spread out.

System restore won't do me any good becaseu i haven't made any restore points.

XP automatically makes restore points, provided the service is running.
Did you check if you have any ?

If you don`t have any, then my suggestion would be the same as previous post.

i'm pretty sure i disable the service but it doesn't really matter now.

I did the recovery setup but that just made it much worse.

I now get a BSOD while booting everytime and i can't go into safemode or any otehr mode because of the new instillation and so crap with that, either way, i don't have the option.

My only option now is to back up my data under ubuntu and reformat. Thx for the help.

If that was help, you won`t want to meet me when I`m being unhelpful.:(

I hope you can recover your files with Ubuntu.
Knoppix can also do the job.

On the bright side,a lot of people do a fresh install of Windows every year or so just to keep it zippy.

You will turn on system restore in the future,of course.
